present lore, if the retaining it for any toime would probably throw any further impediments in the way of giving it up.
"The property is more of a hindrance than a benefit as it now exists.
His Excellency reduced the annual rent of this lot from £120, by 2 to £51 11/42.
The rental which I was enabled to receive from it did not amount to even that.
From 1st Jan this year, a fire which happened in March last, I have, since that time, not been in receipt of any rental whatever.
Under these circumstances I would now again pray His Excellency to be good enough to make resumption of this lot on Her Majesty's Government, and thus relieve me from a heavy annual loss.

5th August, 1850-
I have the honor to report that some members of the Deputation of Justice waited on me and represented the expediency of erecting a tread-mill within the Jail, for the purpose of giving employment to such of its inmates as might be sentenced to this kind of labour.
On consulting the Surveyor General regarding the possibility of constructing one here, he informed me that it was very difficult to obtain the necessary materials at Hong Kong, but stated that he would make enquiries on the subject.
On the 2nd Instant I received a report from that officer on the proposed work;
