As far as the pleasure of ordinary human interenure: is concerned, there can be no doubt about it. It is rather depressing and not at all Battering to, our vanity to know that we are interesting only so long as we are sick or sorry. FRANCE.

Owing to the serious increase. wbich has been noted recently in the number of cuses of chronic alecholism, anys the "Paris corrispondent of a London paper, the Academia de Médecine lias appointed. a special committee to investigate the subject with a view to making repre- sentations to the Government. Accord ing to a report presented to the Academy by the General Secretary of the National Anti-Alcoholic League, the consumption of pure alcohol in the form of spirits and various kinds of apéritifs has in- creased from 767,000 hectolitres in 1921 to over 1,000.000 hectolitres, last year. Between 1813 and 1910 there was a mark- ed diminution in the consumption of spirits, without any corresponding in- crease in the use of less potent liquors such as wine, beat, and cider, but a great change has taken place since the Armis tice. The Secretary of the Anti-Alcoholic League draw attention to the fact that. though latinthe was prohibited in 19147 14 it has now been repläted by a variety of drinks similar in taste and almost equally dangerous. The reelt, of this

growing consumption of liquors with an aniseed base is, it is elained to be sen in the rapid increase of chronic alcoholism which had become very rare in the period immediately following the end of the war. As there is in existence w Jaw whith provides that the Government shull forbid ter toanufacture and consumption of drinks containing essences which the "Academy of Medicine declares to be dan

gerous, the committee appointed by the Academy is to pay special attention to an inquiry concerning current substitutes for the forbidden absinthe.
