Of the first, dating from the earliest times to the beginning of the Christian era. we have only vague re cords of maps of a conventional and primitive type. no traces of which now exist. In the second period, extending down, to the twelfth century, the chief cartographiect records are to be found in the bandrawn maps accompanying the carliest known editions of the fight volumed Geography of Ptolemy (150 A.D.), hased on nnthematical principles to a large extent derived from his pre decessor, Marinus of Tyre (c.190).

In striking contrast to these purely
in petajent conventional 324px period were the wonderfully accurate. coastal charts which had been in use! Tues. among the Mediterraneao"mariners from
* Wel the days of the Crusades.
Portolaui- Tacs charts-known as were based upon estimated bearings and distances from port to part art in the the discovery of next period (from America to about the end of the eighteenth century) their accuracy was still further increased by the introduc- tion of the magnetic nedir for taking bearings and the use of the cross-staff or An. astrolabe for observing latitudes. Farmy of marine cartographers sprung up in the Italian and Catalonian seaports, and their charts formed the groundwork for the better general maps of the world and globes, which about this time bdgan to be jasued.
As many actual specimens as possible of these antiquities of enttography, and, where the originals are not available, accurate reproductions, are on view at che British Empire Exhibition. A study of them serves to, increase our wonder at the Rchievements, ak the age of dis covery. Such maps and charts would

It was in the latter half of the eighteenth century, that maps "began to be printed from woodcuts. copper. engraving superseded the use of woodcuts, as copper plates were found to be a better medion for securing a higher standard of engraving, besides affording far greater facilities for keep- ing
the plates up to date
Later,
The application of printing to maps naturally gave a great impetus to their production. Waldseemuller, the foremost. cartographer of the early sixteenth cen tury, published a series of maps. includ- ing large twelve-sheet map of the world, and among English map-makers of the time may be mentioned Lilly and Lloyd Droligh, who both issued maps of the British Isles.
A little later Antwerp and Amsterdam produc became the great centres of map tion, and the atlases of "Mercator, Ortelius, Waghenaer, Hondius, Janszon, and Bleau and those of the French firm of Sanson, were the chief curto- graphical publications of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The only noteworthy British map-makers in com petition with the Dutch cartographers were Saxton and Speed, who produced atlasra of the British Isles, und "Pont and Gordon, who issued a map of Scot fam, while Halley, the astronomer com, piled.in compass variation "and wind charts, two of the earliest cartographical contributions to physical geography.."
FRENCH SKILL.
In the following period, beginning with the eighteenth century, French map-makers at first look the premier" place, especially Delisle and D'Anvilles their chief British contemporaries ing Desharres for constal surveys-notably those of Captain Cork), Jeffreys (for Ameriene maps), Remel (for maps of India), and Arrowsmith.
Anhough Hondius bad founded a. geographient establishment in Germany in 1709 it was not until the beginning of the nineteenth century that that country became the head quarters of scientific geography, a positinu which remained unchallenged until recent
