The author shows how in thirty years the Japanese have succeeded in developing economically what was little more than a wilderness, and how they have failed, for all their good intentions, in their attempts to settle the native tribes, made intractable by centuries of oppression.
Formosa is the Island Colony of Japan, and Mr. Rutter has written a charming account, well illustrated with excellent photographs.
