MOST VALUABLE · GOLF STROKE,
LEARNING TO PLAY? A "» PUSH
SHOT.
[BY HARKY VARDON.]
There is no doubt that what is com monly called the "push shot is one of the most profitable strokes in golf,
It is a curious fact, therefore, that is almost wholly neglected by a"large, number of amateurs. To some extent, of Forse, this is due to the fact that a man must have passed through his novitiat and be reasonably sure of hitting the ball before he dare attempt the ** push,”
It is used by several great amateur players, and virtually every professional has mastered the art. As à matter of fact. I am inclined to think that it is be cause it is practised so persistently by professional players that the standard of their golf is generally better than that of the amateurs.
The great valus of the "pash" shot. flies in the fact that by its mean the ball 1s made to rise sharply teavel consider able distances at not too high an altitude. and stop within a few yards of the place where it comes to earth. The advantage
of being alle always to rely on these things obvious. Professionals me the stroke for all iron dubs, even for niblük shots out of a banker, providing, of cours that the ball is lying well and not even partially buried in the sand.
HOW IT WORKS.
Back-spin is the great influence in the stroke. Je is this which makes the ball rise sharply and causes it, after the im- pact, to revolve rapidly in the opposite direction to that in which it is travelling. This couther of the two forces is wally what causes the ball tarise quickly but when the velocity of the impacz has been spent, the back-spin makes the shot flat- en ont, if I may use the expression, keeps the ball low, and maintains its Hight on the same plane for a rennurkably long time. Then the ball drops as sharp
y as it has risen, and remains within a few yards of the spot where it fell.
The push" is really the master stroke of the game but, as I have said. it is hardly within the compass of players who are not within measurable distance of the seratea mark, for it demands extraordin-

a perfect concur rence of several unusual movements.

try
How, then, do we set about obtaining this wonderfully dicucious shot in the first place it should be remembered that in the address the player's hands and the shaft of the elab should be slightly in front of the ball. The club must go up distinctly straighter than for
any other shot in the game, and nothing more than A threequarter swing should ever be at- tempted.
The weight of the body should be mostly on the left leg, and the upright swing will necessitate a rather closer stanes than for an ordinary shot. The object of the player is not to bring the club round - with the usual propelling action, but to come down on the back of the ball to clip. it, so to speak, so that the effect is us if to make it.
apin slightly up the face of the club.
"Obviously this very considerably-en- bances the danger of a topped shot, and. as a matter of fact, the player who sets himself to master the pash will pre- hably suffer many of these disheartening Should he do so it will be experiences. entirely due to the fact that he is not using this body and wrists in the right way at the moment of impagt.
* FAVOURITE SHUT.
The hauds must be slightly hit appre cably in front of the ball for the address.
That when the contact is made, at the, rearmost part of the ball.more than half' the face of the club is lifted in a way over it. In the ordinary shot, of course, the
