The Anglo-French misunderstanding over the terms of the invitation to the July conference appears to centre round the French contention that the British Foreign office inserted in its invitation to the July conference suggestions "amount

ng to suppression of the authority of the Reparations Commission. An authori tative statement has been issued in Log“ don, already cabled, and this was nanded to the French Ambassador, who inter viewed Sir nyre Crowe to-day.A clear ing up of misunderstanding is anxious awaited at the Quas D'Orsay, where there ze hopes of a satisfactory explanation from vitain, but it is rentisel that the difiquity or reneutig an agreement at the Landon Conference may be considerably merensel. The situation is most embar- rassing for M. Somehow a report of this diary got about London, and one day a publisher whom I knew only slightly came to me and made me the extraordinary offer of £10,000 if I would permit him to publish it. Why I thought the man had gone mad was the shock of my life.

When I recovered my speech I inform ed him that I most emphatically consented to the publication. Not only that, but as I wanted money badly. I would get to work immediately to put it into shape for printing
