"A New York correspondent a month. ngo cabled to a London paper:
The assertion that Lloyd's is cancelling its jewellery insurance in the United States as the result of losses totalling £700,000 bas aroused unusual interest in American insurance circles. It was said there that it is decidedly, possible that Lloyd's bave been forced to sustain beavy losses, which made them agree with Ame- rican firms that this sort of business is not particularly desirable.

A Lloyd's correspondent writing to the
same paper says:-
For some time there has been much 'discussion because the insurance laws of the State of New York are such that in some respects Lloyd's underwriters can- not comply with them.
The state of affairs referred to in the report given above marks the climax of this discussion. Joyd's underwriters, unable to comply with the State laws and having no wish to act in contraven tion of thers, have decided to give up the insurane of private jewellery in the State of New York.
The eventual loss of business to Lloyd's will not be great, for it is usual for American companies to reinsure & large portion of their liabilities in the London market, and a great deal of this rein- sitrance is planted on Lloyd's.

WHISKY FROM TREACLE.
During the last twenty years (says Mr. John McCaffrey in Chambres quernaly most of the potret made in Ireland was distilled from trezele or classes. Poteen made from molasses can be dix. tilles in forty-eight hours, and with com paratively little trouble. It is, therefore, very popular with the poteen-makers who want quick results. Incidentally, molasses could he obtained free of duty by farmers who certified that the stuff was required for eattle-feeding purposes. In this way they experienced very little troable in obtaining comparatively largs supplies for potern-making. The Excins officers were required to satisfy them- selves that the supplies delivered duty- free were legitimately used. The farmers were, of course, always able to assure the officials that the law was respected!
