Relics of the life of those who lived in the settlement about 1,000 years ago are being discovered, including ornamental pottery, metal instruments, tiles, bores. and oyster and mussel shells Oystris werm regarded as a great delicacy by the aa Esipan and are often found among Romans, as they are by the modern Roman remains in Britain,

Although the remains lie only foot and a half below a flat field, there is a fascinating uncertainty as to what may be discovered and as to the area covered by the relics

The discovery of a bastion near the edge of the cliff leeds colour to the throry. that the remains represent the site of a Roman fort. It is thought that the bas tion may be the base of a watch tower or a signal-tower, used as a link in the chain of communication between Dovey” and Lympne. It is also thought that it may have been a lighthouse.

The discovery was made by Mr. S. E.

Wiabolt, a Christ Hospitul classical

master and a keen archeologist, who heard that there was a Roman drain in

the cliffside at East Cliff. He went to

the pot and saw three abutments of Roman wall there. He started digging, and at a depth of lift. found the walls.

Folkestone Corporation has made a grant of £150 towards the expenses of the excavation, which Mr. Winbolt is carry ing on in his holiday, with the assistance of his daughter. Anyti
