RECEIVED AUG. 22 1850
Victoria, Harbouring,
I regret to have to report to your Lordship the death of Mr J. Smith, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, which occurred at Macao on the 17th Instant, leaving, I understand, a wife, and 3 children totally unprovided for.
In consequence of this vacancy, I have abolished the situation of Clerk to the Supreme Court, and appointed Mr. W. H. Alexander, the holder thereof, Deputy Registrar in the late Mr Smith's place.
By this arrangement, it will be perceived that I have carried into effect the instructions contained in paragraph 4 of your Lordship's Despatch.
The Right Honourable,
The Earl Grey,
