With reference to your Lordship's Despatch
No 169 dated 12th March last, I have the honor
to inform you that there exists no evidence
of Mr. Bützlaff having paid any
amounts of Poll tax twice over.
On the contrary I should state that on the 18th November 1846 it was necessary to surcharge that Gentleman with £19. 17. 6, which balance against
him arose from
the circumstance
of his having drawn a second time the sum
of £24. 2.- for Wages of the Chinese writers for the month of May 1846 - sic : in the first instance from the Commissariat chest, and again from the Colonial Treasury for the whole of the
