BRITISH WOMEN IN THE FAR EAST.
THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES.
In the course of an address on the responsibilities of British Women in the Far East. Bishop Malony of Chek Klang. made a very earnest and inspiring appeal to a very large audience of British ladies at a meeting of the Mother's Union beid at the Helena May Institute, to as their influrner for the good of the Community, He asked how any of those present had learned anything about the early English coming cut to China." They had heard, wo doubt that the Island of Hongkong was eeded to the British in 1942 and perhaps they know that it was coded to the British as the result of a war with China, a war which anise "because the British insisted that China should accept their trade. He brielly referred to the growth of the great trading concern the East India Trading Company which after exploiting India came to China for trading purposes, but Chingalil not want them China in those days thought their country was the only exclusively on place in the world.
At the conclusion of that war Lord The Ashley wrote in 1812 these worda: world is intasicated with the prospects of trade with China." Since then and right down to the present day it had been 20- thing but trade, trade, trade. In Hong- kong, Shanghai Ningpo, Tienta, Han- kow and other big centre where Euro- peans Bath-ted the great cry' was trade, Trudir trade.
"Now you see why I speak about this," continued Bi-hop Malony, does it not make you think that yo ve other pos ponsibilities sides buying and selling? We come here to adminster, to buy and to aed, but do we care one jut about "the soul of China! 1s it to be trade all the time Have we got no souls that rebel against such an idea cometimes think that we have to right to be here," But her we are and it can't be helped. A east, you ladies cannot help being here. You have come here to join your husbands, or your brother and, being attached to a great trading community, we have spousbili ties to God to make something of our influence in this place. Now the Chinese have never wanted us. They simply come here to get our protection, and they are
China glad to have it. But as soon as peaceful and well-contented they will go back into China. They don't really love us, and yet we have a tremendous influence over them. They are copying us in overy. thing. Their own country is in such a chactic state that they look to us and think that we somehow have got the secret of power, of good government and of stability.
The apker went on to say that Young China specially was copying them, the boys and girls of the better classes were dreaming of the time when they could da something great for China. They wers in the great centres and drinking
in the influences of the West. Scieno, Art, politics and history interested them and they were seeking to know what was this the reason for this great power. wealth and stability.

The Bishop went on to speak of the good influence of our seboels and colleges and hospitals. In the hospital, especially, the influence was felt keenly. Hospital were breaking down superstition in point- ing out that demons and evil spirite were not responsible for sickness. But the mest effective influence of all was the uncon scious indueree when they went about their daily life.
Coming to the wond part of lecture, the Bishop put forward a number of suggestions as to how the influence for good could be brought out. First and foremost, he suggested the real. pure religious life which should not be allowed to play a secondary place in life, Secondly, be asked his audience to do some work for their own people. There were may mother's in Hongkong, who did hos young know anything about the Mothers Baion There were the young women in the shop. the offices and those arriving out from Home. They would be all glad of a help- ing hand.
Married ladies, contended the speaker, had the most influence with young men. They could invite young men to their homes where they could enjoy the true standard of home life as liyed in the old Country, and thereby really attain to the higher ideals of life when social life clog.

Thirdly, to suggested organised work for the woman. They would offer their servious to some organised cause by join ing some committees, or by "offering their services to a school and help with some of the good work that is going on.
Fourthly, he suggested that they should taki

At the conclusion of the lecture Bishop Duppuy, who presided, proposed a voto of thanks to the speaker and appealed to the women who had not joined the Mothers' Union to do so at the close of the meeting.
