So far as food prices in England are concerned the cost of living is not likely to diminish very much for some time to come, according to the views expressed by some of the big importing firms in London. In this instance the rise will be due to the unfavourable rate o exchange with America, a subject in which most house wives are not perhaps largely interested, but affect on the purse is felt just the
same.
The breakfast rasher is to he slightly dearer, too. They are going to kill fewer piga in Denmark in the future, hence the increase in price of the rasher. But eugs are to be cheaper. English hens will soon be at the top of their laying form, and a fall of 14. a dozen in the price of new id eggs is expected soon. There are also large supplies of imported eggs. To-day's prices are:-Ecglish new laid 3. d., imported new laid 38., tind "ecok- dozen. Butter prices have been advanced in the shops lately. Salt butte-the cheapest-is now 28. 2d, fresh rolls 29. 3, and Danish, trish, and Devonshire s. 6d. Two ships have just arrived in the Thames with over two hun- dred thousand boxes of butter from New Zenimi, so prices ought soon to be lower. Lard also costs more. The imported variety is up to 11d. a pound, and Irish and Wiltshire lard is is. l. Higher prices for cheese are anticipated, but Colonisi cheese can be got in the shops to-day at Is. 2d. a pound. English makes are 15. 8d., except Stilton, which is 2s. 30.
The holiday demand over, meat sales- men have reduced most of their prices. Some joints cost 5d. a pound less than a fortnight ago. Best joints cost from Is a pound for shoulder to to. 3d. for leg. Veal is rather dearer now, but pork is plentiful and reasonably cheap. Poulterers hold good stocks, for which there is not much call, and prices are a shade easier. Game is dearer, and pheasants now cost. 148. 6d. à brace partridges being 9a. Another legal dispute between 31r. Frank J. Gould and his divorced wife. Edith Kelly, the dancer, will shortly come before the First Chamber of the Civil Tribunal of Versailles on Edith Kelly's petition for a division of her former bus- hand's property, Her clair, amounting to 800,000,000l. (about £8,000,000 at the present rate of exchange), is based on the contention that as no definite mar riage contract was entered into with Mr. Gould she is now entitled to an equal share of his property in France, a well- known French law providing that where nouarriage contract is snade property rights are equally divided between hus- band and wife. Mr. Gould's legal ad- visers contend that neither he nor Edith Kelly is subject to French jurisdiction in this matter, because the marriage took place in England and both are American citizens. The Court will not have to go into details concerning the property in dispute, but will confine itself to answer ing two questions: (1). Whether the French law applies to this marriage, "and" (3) under what régime did the marriage take place. This case is an addition to a series of actions which began when Edith Kelly contested in New York the validity of the divorce granted at Fer- sailles nearly three years ago. She re- 'cently lost an action in which her former- husband contested ber right to use his name in connection with her appearances on the stage, the French Court prohibit ing her use of the name of. Gould under liability to a penalty of soaf. for each violation of the ruling.
