The Prince Regent left the Akasaka Palace accompanied by Count Chiada, his Grand Steward, his suite, and escort, and motored slowly through a mile and a half of streets packed with cheering. subjects. His procession reached the Chiyoda Palace shortly before the Prin cess's. Both the Prince and the Princess were immediately ashered into their res pective robing rooms. The Begent, dress, ed in full ceremonial marriage costume. emerged carrying a sceptre and joined the Princess, who carried a Hinoki Court fan. The massive doors of the outer sbrine swung back, and as the imposing gathering stood facing the approach to the inner shrine, Prince Kujo recited in a monotote the Shinto scripture mess ages. Then the inner shrine was opened and the bridegroom approached and paid homage to the Altar, afterwards reading a report to his ancestral shades. Then the couple retired to the outer shrine, where Prince Kajo filled and handed the cup of sacred wine first to the Regent and, after he had drunk, to the bride. Thus the main ceremony was concluiled. Somewhat similar proceedings took place at the detached shrines within the grounds,

Leaving the Chiyoda Palace the Re gent and his consort, occupied the same State carriage. They were followed by Viscount Makino, Minister of the In- perial Household, Count Chinda, the Household officials, and imposing suites of " notables, and military escorts. As the procession passed amid the massed multi- tudes it received everywhere the same obeisances and continuous banzaitėsi. dences of the deep respect felt for the Prince Regent and his bride. At the Akasaka Palace, the future home of the Imperial couple, the Prince and Princess held a reception of Court and Govern ment officials. This function was follow- ed by a grand fête, the day closing with the presentation of rice cakes, symboliz ing long life, happiness, and abundance through the generations. The last public act of a long day of ceremonial was au- other formal exchange of wine cups be- tween the bride, and the bridegroom.

DOMINIONS SHARE OF DEFENCE.

Lecturing on "Overseas Naval Forces" at the Royal United Service Institution. On January 13th, Rear-Admiral Sir E. P. F. G: Grunt said that while it would not be altogether reasonable to expect the Colonies and Dominions to take their full share in Imperial defence, it was hoped that the results of the Im perial Conference would bear good fruit in this respect. At the present time the contributions of the Dominions to Empire defence per capita were: Australia, 179. ed; New Zealand, 12s. 1d.: South Africa, 11s 10d.; Canada. 6. Ed. nod Great Britain, 584. 4d. For the Navy alone the contributions per capita were: Australia, Os d. New Zealand, 45. ed: South. Africa, 1d. Canada, 1s. 28; and Great Britain, 278, 5d Admiral Grant, declar- ed that a xeneral Imperial naval policy "which would define what was considered: the minimum requirement for each Dominion was essential for future. curity

Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdce said that the Dominions were the limbs of the Empire. These limbs must not be cut' off owing to their own Milure to perceive the necessity for defending themselves.
