modern banks and the native backs, for as rrerywhere else, they are like the GODOWNS. pulse in the commercial life, very sensi tive to all and every thing commercial Among the modern banks, though the majority have managed to pass through the year with a fair degree of safety, not a few of them bave not dared to make public as yet what the actual balances of their profit and loss secounts are. This is not a very good sige. As to the native banks, and a very powerful group they are in their own way, at least eight will not again re-open for business at all. Bix of these belong to the second class native banks dealing a good deal in speculation, but on the surface doing the business of the money-changers. Of the first class native banks of Ta Tung Street two bave definitely gone out of business. All the rest are able to make more or less profit. There are only two of them that cinim have made a big succesŤ, each making about one hundred thou- sand dollars. They are Wing Cheong and Wing Sang banks of Cheong Lan Kal. But these two deal principally in speculation. Profit made an account of such operation could not be said to be in connection with bona fide business.
In the real estate line we find this to bo practically dead for already nearly a year. We frd. Further that many have shifted their capital to Hongkong where
they are taking up lands, especially on the Kowloon side. Coston yarn merchants have not found that their business is as profitable as before. In fact, if

Export business from the interior is out of the question, save perhaps, raw silk. the transportation of which, in many instances has been attended to by for eigners in person. Exportation of bam- boo wares, parasols and even mahjong have become more frequent of late but these are still small":
