SCOTTISH SPORT. FRANCE'S DEFEAT OF SCOTLAND

IN RUGBY.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDEST.]

EDINBURGH, January 10th, If proof were needed of the great advance the Rugby game has been making in France within recent years it will be found in the result of the Srat Interna- tional of the season decided in Paris. This advance undoubtedly owes much to the importance the French Ministry at taches to Rugby in the training of French youths at the military depots and to the keen rivalry in the game among the various departments of the country. For the ninth time Scotland and France met on the Rugby field and the Frenchmen acored their third victory in the series. The first was gained at Paris in 1911 by To points to 13, the second in 1921 at Inverleith by 3 points to nothing, and this last success was obtained by a mar- gin of two points. Each of the victories has been close, but the bald result at Paris, 12 points to 10, scarcely dnes justice. to the Gallie viesory. The Frenchmen crossed the Scottish line four times an against Scotland's s once. Playing under ground conditions which should have suited the skilled serummagers. of the Scottish team the Frenchmen not only held their own, but achieved victory hy a margin which from all accounts barely does justice to their superiority. While Scotland's reverse is disappointing, it can suarcely be termed unexpected after the comparatively unsatisfactory form shown in the recent trials. Speed and opportun ism have always been present in full measure ip French International teams. but lack of scrummage science has been the stumbling black. Evidently this dis- culty ban now been removed, the forwards showing surprisingly good form and lend- ing effective support to a back division which proved far too fleet for their op Last year the Scottish team ponents. almess achieved complete success in the International games, being beaten by England alone, and then by only a goal kick. This season defeat has already been, experienced, and only a great effort and a fair measure of good forture will now bring the Championship north of the Border. Gracie, the Scottish captain, said, after the match that France's vic- tory. was thoroughly deserved.

The French forwards were very strong and quick on the ball. The team was now playing on the model of the English team, and the Scots leader predicted that this last victory would not be the only one this year. The Scotsmen, he said, did not get the ball out of the, scrum.

are to be congratulated in accomplishing a performance vainly attempted by clubs of greater repute and better placed on the League table. The victory recalls Ayr United's sensational success over the same opponents' in the second round of the Scottish ties last season. Until now it has been a drab season for Ayr, as they have only won 5 games. Apart from the smirching of Rangers' record, the result has little significance, as they still bold a lead as commanding that, so far as the championship goes, the League competition is practically settled. Air- drieonians are losing ground, as they have, loss to Hamilton Academicals and Dundee drew with Raith Motherwell. Hovers, who have lost 10 points in eight. days. Relatively, Caltic are now Rangers nearest apponents. Queen's Park are improving their outlook somewhat. PrOURES ON TURNING THE CORNEL

The holiday Hugly matches were fex, the most interesting being played at Hawick, where the Heriotonians, with what seemed a moderate side on daty, gained a notable" victory over the ict, 16 to 0. Other Border clubs were more successful, Hedforest defeating Glasgow Academicals by 9 to 6; and Selkirk de feating Glasgow University by 14 to 6.

Quite a number of clubs were out at Changchun Hankow Manebouli Tientat the week-end, and there was grand Chefco Harbin Newahwang Urumtchi fight between the old boys of Herlot's and ↑ Dairen

Yokohama the Watsonians. In its way it was a Hailar- curious contest, 4 Heriot's, although they were in their opponents' quarters much more frequently than the Watson- ians were in theirs, were beaten after so interval of over three years by the rather wide margin of 23 points to 11. To this nobody contributed more than L. J. Dunn, who, in addition to gaining two tries, kicked four goals from five attempts. Four of the Watsonian tries were gained by sweeping advance, from their oND ground, reminiscent of their pre-war die plays, whereas Heriot'a two Биссенова were achieved at close quarters. Therein lay the difference between the two sides, the winners being far ahead in style and nicely executed passing movements. The rsult is a bad set-back to Heriot's, who have now only an outside chance of re- taining the Club Championship, which they gained unchallenged last season. was expected that Wanderers would make a good appearance, but Glasgow Acade nical won in a canter by 30 to 5. Glas, gow High School F.P's led. Edinburgh Institution by 38 points. Stewart's bad a stern struggle with Metrose before they won by 9 to 8. Edinburgh Academicals defeated Royal High School F.P.' by @ to 5. thus reversing, the decision earlier in the season.. Edinburgh University bent Jedforest by 10 to 5, und Glasgow University were 20 to 5 better than West of Scotland.

The death is announced of W. R. Gib son, the old Scottish and Royal High School forward. He played in 14 inter- nationals in the nineties, and was a grand type of the hard-working, bustling for ward, a terror to opponenta," The late Mr. Gibson was a teller in the Commer- cial Bark of Scotland.

SOCCER HOLIDAY MATCHES.

Of all the crowd of holiday League matches that between Bangers and Celtic attracted most attention, and it is the univeral verdict that the old rivals never gave a better display of skill. It was great game all through and ended in a draw, 2 goals each. So far as results went, none was startling; in fact, there was a measure of consistency throughout..

The only club to win on op- ponents ground was Kilmarnock, who beat St Mirren by a goal. Queen's Park were not playing League, and had a meet ing with the great English Amateur.com- bination, Corinthians, who gave them a sound beating.

On the second day of the holidays Rangers again filled the first place in the public eye, and defeated Partick Thistle by one goal. Celtic recorded another draw their tenth this season-this time with Clyde. They have now drawn more games than they have won. Queen's Park trounced Third Lanark, and every one hopes that this marks the turn of the tide of their luck, as they stand in great danger of relegation.

At the close of the holidays, Rangers were defeated in the League for the first time; they played 22 games without having their colours lowered. Ayr United.
