MARVELS OF MINUTE

WORKMANSHIP. ··

The Queen's Dolls House, with its rich treasures of art and literature, its araar- ing perfection and historical carey down to its minutest detail is intended to serve as a model of contemporary domestic architecture, as

well as a permanent re cord of the furnishing and decorating of the kind of mansion in which the King and Queen of England might live in the year 1821. The house will be shown to the public in a special pavillion at the British Empire Exhibition.

and

Leading artists, authors, and craftsmen, working under the stimulus of her High- ness Princess Marie Louise and Sir Edwin Lutyens RA, have been busy for two yous past in preparing this, home in mini ature for presentation to the Queen. Her Majesty already possemos dolls house,

It was which dates from about 1980. given to her by her mother, the Duchen of Teck, and consists of six rooms, con- taining between 200 and 300 pieces of furniture--gifts and purchases extending over several years, arranged by the Queen herself, who lent the house to the landon Museum in 1920 for an indefinite period. A few weeks ago

the Green inspectent her new gift, now practically complete down to the ruaning of its water and electric lifts, and the filling of the last gap in its Lilliputian library, and expressed the krea- est appreciation of its manifold wonders.

The measurements given of the dining- room are only 42in. long, 20in. wide, and 13in. high. The dining table, ready for service down to the smallest detail, Is Got more than lin. in boight. The chairs Over tha are just half an inch tigher. mantelpiece is a portrait of the Prince of Wales in the hunting field, by Mr. A. J. Munning A.R.A. At the end of the room is a can be Mr. Ambree McEvoy of Winterhalter's group of "Queen Vic- torin, the Prince Consort, and Family." left and right of the Breplace ans portraits of Edward III. and James V. of Scotland, by Sir William Lwellyn. The fine ceiling is by Professor Gerald fairn. So it is with every room in the house net omitting, the box room, bath room, and nursery all furnished and de corated according to the highest authori ties on present-day taste. Not the rast striking feature of the house is a marble staircase of rare distinction. The whole of the architecture of the house has been designed by Sir Edwin Latṛen«, R. A.

A

Special arrangements are being made to enable the public to see each floor of the Dolls' House from overy point of view. When the exhibition opens at Wembley Park, therefore, it will not be necessary to follow the memorable example of Gulliver. who would only look through the windows

the Imperial Palace at Milenda by ly ing down upon his side, ·The Queen' Dolls House will be mounted on a 'stand, roughly breast high, with a arrounding platform of increasing height so that every visitor will have an equal chance of discovering, like Gulliver, the most splendid apartments that can be in- agined."

The Dolis House library possesses many points of unique value and interest. The majority of its diminative volume consist of original matter specially written for the purpose, including work by some of our leading authors which will never be reprinted.

Mr. Rudyard Kipling has illustrated a selection of his poems with original draw. ings As some indication of the value set upon the contents of the house, it may be mentioned that when Mr. Kipling's volume was borrowed for purposes of re- production it was insured for £500 alone. Nothing lacking to render the library There are complete in every respect. "Who's Who" and "Whitaker's Alman- ack," reduced by photographic process, the first to high by in, wide, the second to in high by fin. wide.

Brad shew and the A.B.C." are also avail able in similar editions: while the stock of minute stationery" is complete down even to a tiny book of specially printed postage stamps.

LIFE ON THE OTHER SIDE. SPIRITUALISM'S KNOWLEDGE.":

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, speaking at the Royalty Theatre on January 8th an "Modern Psychic Knowledge," said that faith; in a great many ways, bal ben a deterrent in the world, and had cause many of our troubles. When waking of psychic matters be proposed to put before them knowledge. As proving that there was a life after death, he quoted three cases that had come under his own obser vation, and which he believed admitted of no explanation other than a psychic out.
