A COMMONS SCENE.

MR JACK JONES AND THE HOUSE OF LORDS.

Mr. Jack Jones, the Socials, memler for Silvertown, whose appearances have not always added dignity to the proceed. ings of the House of Commons was sNOCH On January 2th in the role of guardiau of the honour of the popularly-elected Cimaber. Exactly what roubled him he never explained. For some reason ather known only to himself he "fancied, that the House of Lords had treated the Commons with "contempt," and he wish ed to have an opportunity of airing his grievance.

ur

From what can be gathered, it appears that Mr. Jones's sense of dignity was offended when he attended in the House of Lords to hear the Royal approbation being given by Commission to the selec tion of Mr. Whiteley as Spřaker becauso there was only a handful of peers pre- sent. Mr. Jones" wants a crowded house when he visits the second Chamber. Failing to and a place at the bar among the many members who accompanied the Speaker-Elect to the House of Lords, Mr. Jones ascended to one of the galleries | reserved to members of the Hour of Commous From" this point of vantage he watched the ceremonial below, whera Mr. Whitley announced his election for the offer of Speaker, and was at orge asured by the Lord Chancellor of the King's approval. As is customary," the peaker then laid chim to the anciers and undoubted right land privileges of the Commons, particularly freedom of sprech in debate, and freedom from arrest, all of which were at once allowed in as ample a manner as they have ever been granted." While these pro ceedings were in progres Mr. Jones's in- dignation began to grow, and soon there were indistifel mutterings from his part of the gallery. He was curtly told by a fellow-member to "shut up away. Neither piece of advice was no ceptable. Mr. Jones, as an elected re presentative of the people, claimed hie right to his place, and apparently a right to make him if heard wherever he goes. "TREATED WITH CONTEMPT."

When the members of the House of Cominous returned to their own Chamber and Mr. Whitley had donned the full- attomed wig and the gown of his, often as Speaker, Mr. Jones attempted to mak a question about the procedure in the House of Lords, but he was told by the Speaker that the House of Commons had nothing to do with that. The remainder of the sitting passed in comparative quietude, members following each other closely at the table while taking the oath. There was but one incident that created a little feeling. Members on the Front Government bench, were the first to take the oath, followed by those entitled to seats on the front Opposition bench and Privy Councillors.
