RISKS TAKEN BY LLOYD'S STRANGE INSURANCES IN FAMOUS FIRM'S HISTORY.

Features in the fascinating history of Lloyd's are recalled by the news, which has much interested the City, that after having made its headquarters at the Royal Exchange for a century and a half, the famous insurance organisation is to build itself a new home in Leaden-hall Street. In the old days insurance policies wero : cffected by bankers, merchants, and! moneylenders, each one who took a risk on any policy writing his name below. As Mr. Sydney Boulton has recalled in an interesting booklet, the foot of the poley would have items like the follow. ing:-£100-1, John Berry am content. with this assurance, which God preserve, for one hundred pounds, this twentieth day of January, isso.

DERELICT MYSTERY. »

The curiosities of shipping insurance are just as great, but rose is greater than that associated with the sailing ship Marie Celesite. It was in 1972, she left New York for Genoa. Five weeks later she was hailed by another ship in the! Mediterranean, bus did not respond. Investigation showed that there was not n single person on board the vessel; yet not one of the ship's beats was missing, the cargo was untouched, all the sails were set, the wook's "washing was hang ing up to dry abore the forecastle and both in the forecastle and in the cabin were found a fresh-cooked and half- chten meal. There was no the slightest sign of violence, and no satisfactory ex- planation of what happened bas ever Ahousand odd been put forward.

stories are bound up with the history of Lloyd's. and the change of headquarters of such a remarkable corporation is some- thing that may well be regarded as note- worthy. The plans have been prepared by Sir Edwin Cooper in respect of the new building.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Among the orders completed recently by a British firm of engine builders for the East Indian Radway Company is one for seventeen locomotives. What is described as an unusual and very simple method has been adopted by the Arm for shipping those locomotives. Beyond the removal of the buffers no parts have been dismantled and when the engines are landed in Calcutta

order. they will be in complete running

The method of shipment, says a home trade paper, has been employe upe several previous occasio

despatch- ing locomotives to purchasers overseas, bat only when the destination has been a Con- tinental or Irish port. In the present case, trever, the shipment was made on the same lines, direct to Iulia, and it is expected that the experiment will prove the practicability of shipping similar loads direct from the makers works to any part of the globe. It is obvious that the sy tem has many advantages apart from the gain in time and the saving in labour costs, for the engines cau commence their revenue earning career, immediately upon
