STEAMER'S 01, DAYS VOYAGE FROM SEATTLE TO SHANGHAI

WOODWORK AND CARGO USED

AS FUEL.

Looking bittered and bruised and Ovi- dently having suffered severely in succession of storms, the ar. Kurdistan, of the Hindustan Steamship Line, reach ed. Shanghai from Seattle las: werk. Th N-C. Daily News says: One shipping man who saw her reach part said that her appearance gave the impression of first having been sunk, then raised and] set on fire, and it is probably dieult to improve upqe this. The outward appearance of the steamer was due to ice coating which settled upon her and which did not really melt until within a couple of days of reaching Shanghai. For the rest the severe storms she ef counterval beensinned her appearance. Little wonder, either, for she had had to go as far north as Alaska for enal in the course of her voyage, and then prior to reaching Shanghai was burning] woodwork and cargo to keep steam going. Her voyage required 61 days, practically i double the usual length of time.

THANKSGIVING DAY 'REPARTURE. The Kurdistan leit Seattle with her eargo of wheat on Thanksgiving Day. November 29th. Twenty-four hours out she struck bad weather, and this continued for no fewer than 15 days. Seas broke over her continually, and bad were the conditions that an occasion she munde: no more than 30 knots during the 24 hours. To make matters worse the sen was never true, the waves running in

ach other. The lifeboats were fashed down, otherwise they would have gone by the board, and as it was they were all strained.

Making such slow progress as this, it became evident that coal would give out long before China was renched. and it was decided to run for Dutch Harbour in Alaska. This port was made under very great difficulties, nud, it is interesting to note that the Kurdistan was, to some extent guided thither by wireless, diree- tions from other ships in the vicinity. Dutch Harbour is a place of about 450 inhabitants, most of thein Aleuts, but there are also a number of Americans, Fortunately, an American firm here had

ed to be more favourable and the Kurdistan set out for her destination. The port was left on Christmas Eve, but immediately the steamer plunged once more into the thick of bad weather. With out intermission this continued for the next three weeks, and then the only thing to do was to make for the nearest Japan port. Coal was again rapidly giving out 22, and whatever weedwork there was, fen. ders and everything else, was being used as fuel in conjunction with the cargo of wheat. By mixing these up with the coal it was possible to keep the furnaces supplied. By January 11th the weather fortunately moderated, and she was züle to make the Japanese port of Kushiro.

To realize the hardships the Kurdistan had experienced up to this sing it may be mentioned that in the early part of the voyage the wind was blowing at any rate up to 150 miles an hour. while the temperature weat as low as eight degrees Fahrenheit. To make matters wore, tho- Kurdistan had previously been on the west coast of Afriën and at one period 92 out of 23 of the crew were down with malaria.

Kushiro was reached safely. but there it was difficult to make the ship's wants known as nobody really spoke English. The Japanese, however, did their best, each official, it is said, having three die tionaries to help him, and the Kurdistan secured enough coal to take her to Muraran. From there, to Shanghai was
