Guerrero 14 a man who, coming from a distinguished and noble Spanish, family, fell into dissolute ways and was tempted by German agents in Spain to come to England as a spy at £50 a week. For this he was to obtain naines and dates of sailing of British merchantmen so that they might be torpedoed
But he had only 16 days' liberty in England, and during that time all his movements in and about Ficendilly-circus and Tottenham Court-road were.watched by Scotland Yard dezgetives, and all his gorresponderce was opened.
His arrest actually came about as a result of his infatuation for La Sultana. who had always been axious to marry! him. She was in Paris, and for syeral days Guerrero tried to get her to Eng land, but it was not until he persuaded Spanish merchant in Fenchurch Street
to write to the dancer, whose real name was Raymonde Amondarain, alius Aurora Aurora de Bilhan, offering her a posi- tion in an office as clerk that the| French authorities granted her pass port.
She made a fatal mistake on landing, for she declared that she was en route | to join her future husband, Signor Guerrero. No La Sultana went before Sir Basil Thomson at Scotland Yard in- stead of jening her future husband, and the Spaniard was in ignorance of either her arrival or detention.
The daner broke down under exami nation. her answers not agreeing with the statements on her papers, and she was arrested, while Guerrero was allowed a fow more days liberty in order that the case against him should be complete.
When they were examined together at Scotland Yard the woman grew violently excited and shouted at her accusers, de- claring there were people in Spain who would make them pay heavily for their presumption in arresting Guerrero and herself.
For many weeks Guerrero maintained that he was a journalist on the staff of a Madrid newspaper, and that he had been sen.to England to write articles.
In order to prove his story untrue de tectives had to go to Spain, and it was not until July 14th, 1916, that he appear ed at the Old. Bailey, and was sentenced to dealt by shooting. His dancer friend

After his sentence Guerrero made a confession in which he 'said that he was known as Victor Guantas in the German Secret Service, that he was the isth spy to come from Spain to England, that he had been tempted by a German agent in Barcelona, and that he was to get £30 A work for his work in Great Britain. The death sentence was quashed, and Guerrero was given ten years.
