The market opened weak, but during the last few days has developed more cheerfulness following improved demand for several stocks, and this has resulted in the transsetion of a larger volume of business.
Hongkong Lands have provided the principal feature with a smart apprecia tion in value, while there has been, slight recovery in Green Island Cements: otherwise prices, with a few exceptions, have kept fairly steady, and latest quota tions shew no great change on the week.
Banks-Hongkong and Shanghai Banks mark further rise, with sales made up to 81,130 and farther buyers at this rate. The London quotation in £128, (middle),
Marino and "Fire Insurances-Uniona have been dealt in at 2000 to 938 and more are wanted at the former figure. North Chions are enquired for at Ts. 140 and Chinz Fires at $140. Cantons at $795 and Hongkong Fires at $350 are not hoved.
Cauton and Shipping-Hongkong, Macao Steamboats have been negotiated at 819 and continue in request. Douglas Steamships have been in good demand and the price has moved upwards to $575, Star Ferries ars asked for at 863).
Refineries-China Sugars were dealt in to a fair extent during the week up to 8973 but close quieter with shares obtaia- able at $269. Malabors at $33 continued. neglected.
Oils and Miring" Shell" Transporta have strengthened and could be placed an 83/6. There are buyers of Kailana at 60/- and Tronohs at 20/- Benguets hare been done at P.2 and continue in request.
Electric Companies-China Lights have Hongkong come to business at $172. Trims fells away in the early part of the week to $251, but have since recovered to a buying rate of 801. Hongkong Elec- tries have been sold at 833.

Docks, Wharrea and Godowns.--Hong- kong and Kowloon Wharres declined to 8173 during the week, but recovered to BITS towards the close Hongkong and Whampoa Docks continue very fat and can be had at $153. Shanghai Docks are on offer at Tis. 81. New Engineerings are wanted at Tis...7.
Lands, Hotels and Buildings.-Hong- kong Lands, after being offered at $96. came into strong demand. and the prion gradually rose to $108. A large business has been done in this stock both for cash and forward. Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels were sold down to 826, but have since reacted to a higher level and could be placed at 828 at the close. Humphreys Estates at 826 are unaltered from last week. A dividend of 80 cents and bonus of 50 cents is announced by this Com
pany.

NEW GERMAN SCHEME
Through German manipulation in re- gard to the Reparations Recovery Act, British importers are paying German reparations
Under the Act the British Customs levied 26 per cent, duty on the value of all imports from Germany. The British importer paid the German supplier by forwarding 74 per cent of their value plus the Customs receipt for 26 per cent, Then the Genous took the Customs" receipt to his own Government and ob- tained the balance.
Now the German Government have announced that they will refuse to re- fund their traders the 28 per cent. This will apply to all transactions entered into since November 17th. The result is the German exporter declines to do business Iwith British firma except on an under. taking that they pay the full 100 per cent. of the value of the goods supplied. But the British Customs continue, to collect the duty from the British importer,
