Lalu, aged 38, a Chinese who is Chief Letters are lying at this Office for of Police in the German Concession.

According to the evidence the quarre? arose over night'e. gambling at the

Imperial Hotel. Plaintiff and defendant, with two other foreigners, had been playing poker and according to Lalu be was practically forced to play a last game, the stakes being 3.000. He won, however, and then he alleges he was Assaulted by Mr. Williams and the latter took from him the cheque he had given him just before fa. payment of the gam- bling debt. This last allegation way denied Defendant was ordered to pay a fine of 80 and $50 costs.

In his evidence Major Lulu said:-We had been playing poker. There were four of us playing, and we started at 4 o'clock, playing up to dinner, and resuming at 9.15. The stake limits were 85 and 810, but the game over which the trouble arose was for $5,000,000.

A Tientsin paper quotes in this connec tion Article 76 of the Chinese Criminal Code which reads: Whorer gambles with any valuable thing as a stake shall be punished with a fine of not more than one thousand yan. The same rule shall not apply to cases where a mere article of amusement or pleasure is the staks."
