"EDINBURGH, November 14th, As was expected Heriot's F.P.'s "were hard put to it before they got the better of Stewart's FP's and might possibly bave had their wonderful record smirched had one of the College forwards not come under the ban of the referee (fr. A. W. Augus) and, been ordered off the field. Prior to this abfortunate occurrenc penalty kicks had been far too frequent. The contest was strappy to a degree, but did not appear to be unduly rough.. Heriot's ato to warmly congratulater on winning through with no fewer than seven of their strongest players absent, a fact which once more eloquently testifies to the richness of their reserves. The third match between the students of Edinburgh and Glasgow, proved most interesting, but the Glasgow students wou as they deserved to do, by 11 points to 3. The foundation of the victory was laid by the forwards, who played particu- larly tine game, and were far ahead of the Edinburgh team both in tactics and con- tro of the hall. Some of their ru-bes were thoroughly effective, and had the defeges been less sound the score would have been very much larger than it wins. RANGERS WELL ESTABLISHED.

11

Nothing startling, or even surprising, happeurd in conection with the Scottish League results. The Rangers were again victorious, and consolidate their position

the head of the first division table, for while Raith Rovers, the Airdrieonians, the Celtic, and Dundee were among the Motherwell. Partick Thistle, and winners, Kilmarnock were defeated. Rangers had more difficulty in disposing of Third Lau ark than was generally anticipated, and their margin of victory was only a couple of the Thirl concentrated them selves on defence... Airdriashowed im proved form, and deserved their two goals dictory over fatherwell. Raith Rovers are al doing well, and defeated Falkirk by 3 to 0. Partick This sacenstered a further reverse at Aberdves, and the lose of Ly points in thro antessive games has pinced the Firhill Club for the time being out of the running. Hamilton Academic opered well, but Celtic were the clever company, winning by 3 to 2 The Edinburgh Clubs recovered some of their lost ground, Hearts defeating Kil marnock rather easily and Hibs dividing the points at Arr. The Paisley- Club scored the only goal of a keen game with Quem's Park. Another fine display br their forwards, supported, by capable half- backs, gave Dundee a comfortable victory over Clydebank, Halliday, the centre forward again scoring three goals.

The League table shows Rangers with 13 played and 23 points; Airdrie, 14 and 10; Raith Rorors, 13 and 19; and Celtic, 14 and 18. Then follow Partick Thistle, Dundee, Motherwell, and Kilmarnock..

A WONDERFUL VETERAN GOLFER.

may.

The best age of the gulfer, is a well- exercised subject. Discussions have fixed upon thirty or thereby as the time of life. when the player should be at his zenith, but the case of Sandy Herd suggests that the prime of a first-class player's career be an elastic term. In this, of course, argument is transferred from the general consideration to the exceptional instauce. Herd wears better than any of his famous contemporaries, as he reminded us the other day by his performance in the Hert- fordshire inter-clab bogor tournament at Oxhey. With Mr. J. L. Scott, who be long to Paisley, he represented the Moor Park Club. Between them they to have humbled Bogey in very emphatic fashion, and won against sides that, among others, included Ted Ras, who was on h home course, and Harry Vardon. Since the war, which marked the turning point for the veterans, Herd's play bas been, remarkable, At Deal three years ago, when George Duncan won the Cham pionship

with

one of the most brilliant parts in history, Herd way, within an ace of success, and it was only a late 7 in his final round that settled hit chance. When Jock Hutchison won at St. Alrews two years ago, and Herd was again well tol the fore, a lost round of 50 taking the edge off three very good ones, and mem ber of the Royal and Ancient Club told hin Your golf to-day is better than ever, and I have seen you play many score

1 of times." That sounded like flatters, and to most men who had left the fifty years mark behind it would have had rather an empty ring, but it actually accords, and therein, is the remarkable feature of Herd's golf, with hiv own personal estimate,. which he again expressed at Oxhey the other day. Hard is convinced that he is at any rate playing as well as ut any time in his life. Yes, he will be fifty-six next. spring.

The cowardly kicking of a brave enemy who is for the time being down and out is not à policy which commends itself to any section of Englishmen.-Dean Inge.

The Prince of Wales, in proposing the toast of the Dominion and Indian Eepre sentatives at the Imperial Conferenc who were entertained to dinner by the Overstas ague, on November 6th em phasised the value of travel, particularly to statemen. journalists, writers, tra- chers, and all who were distributors of ideas and information to the public of Great Britain.
