When we had gained a good knowledge of the project, which we did not have until Mr. Millard came down to Hong kong about ten days before the depar ture of the team, we spared no effort to help make it a success, and, with the co operation of our generous friends and supporters, our appeal for funds received a ready response. Within a short time, asum amounting to nearly $4,000 was subscribed. This was not sufficient, and the balance had to be paid out of the Association fends. Some may say that we could very well let our men go with out making an Association affair of il, and in that case no loss and no trouble would have been incurred by us. This argument appears to be quite right, but at that time the project was bound to fall through if the S.C.A.A. did not take it up. If it did fall through Chips, and
