MR. CHURCHILL'S APOLOGIA.

AN INDECENT ATTACK" ON. THE MILITARY AUTHORITIES..

WHAT YEARLY HAPPENED IN FRANCE,

BY MAJOR-GEN, SIR`F. MAURICE, 13 THE

DAILY NEWS"}

Afr. Churchill's first volume is the most brilliant book on the war which has yet appeared. It was concerned with his time at the Admiralty and with the first part of the war at sea. His second volume now ready, and the first extraet from it bas appeared in the Times.

It is clearly to be an apologia for bis part in the ill-fated expedition to the Dardanelles. Mr. Churchill gertainly entitled to defend himself, but in doing so he begins with an attack so bitter and so mean upon the Generals, French and British alike. that it must be answered at

once,

WARS OF EXHAUSTION.

Speaking of the deadlock that ensued on the Western front with the establish- ment of the trench barrier from the North Sea to Switzerland, he says:

In other words, whereas most of our defence expenditure is sorbal by the Navy, the ather units of the Empire spend the major proportion of their le fence, funds on military forces, The dis. crepancy is sufficiently, marked to give food for thought.

It suggests that the Dominions are anxious to build up land forges of suficient strength to repel au invader, ou nt least to hold him in check Autil succour arrived.

man, Clemenceau by name, who, with the persistence of Cato in the Roc Senate, used to repeat in the French Chamber: "The Germans are within 100 kilometres of Paria.'

I well remember that early in 1915, before the battele of Neuve Chapelle, when Mr. Churchill was engaged in, plan- ning to get the fleet through to Constau tinople, duty took me to French-head- quarters at Chantilly and there; in. bis study, Joffre put his finger on the map hotween Noyon and Paris and said

Remember always that, if the Germans make a successful attacks there-s sommes foulus-wo are done.”

It was in that district that the Ger- mans made their great effort in March, 1918. But before that attack took place the Germans had been driven back forty miles to the outskirts of St. Quentin. It was to achieve that to protect the Channel ports and Paris, that the Allied Commanders asked. that men should be sent to France and not to be killed by Turks in the East. The men who fell achieving that saved us from imminent danger and made victory possible.
