At yesterday's rate of ex- change the metal workers' wage works out in gold at 1.50 marks, and in the building trades at 5.10 marks for a full week of forty-eight hours. In the year preceding the war the wagon in the builds ing trades averaged 41.80 marks weekly, —La-spite of the fact that house rent is vreduced almost to nothing, many food and

EMPIRE OCEAN SHIPPING
IMPERIAL CONFERENCE
RESOLUTIONS.
The Imperial Economic Conferonce on. October, 23rd considered the safety of the oversca, carrying träde. The whole of the representatives of the Dominions recog. ized the vital importance of this trade, and there was very little discussion, the following resolution, moved on behalf of the Government, being passed unanimous-
ly
In view of the vital importancy ko the British Empire of safeguarding its over- seas carrying trade against all forme of discrimination by foreign countries, who ther open or disguised, the represonta tives of the Governments of the Empire declara:-
zr c
1. That it is their established practice
to make no discrimination. between,
*
the Gags of shipping using their ports, and that they have no inten tion of departing from this prac tice as regards countries which treat ocean-going shipping under the British ng on a footing of equality with their own national shipping... -That in the event of danger arising" ,in future to the overseas shipping of the Empire' through an attempt by a foreign country to discriminate against the British flag, the Goy. cruments of the Empire will consult together as to the best, means of mecting the situation.
The next resolution was really the out. como of previous discussions, in which the good work of the Imperial Shipping. Committee had been endorsed by all the Dominions in turn The terms of the rosolution, adopted without discussion, wero:-
That this Conference is of opinion:-(1) That the work accomplished by the In- perial Shipping Committee is convincing proof of the wisdom of its establishment, and that it is of the lughest importaaco to the Empire that this work should continue; (2) that it is, therofore, disir. able to maintain the Cominitive on its 'prescut" basis, deriving authority from, and responsible to, the Governments re presented in the Imperial Conference.
