Professor Borrel, one of the chief French authorities on cancer, who is one of the leading lights of the Pasteur Institute in Paris, has an interesting article in the Matin giving the reasons for his belief that the mysteries of the origin and nature of cancer are about to he revealed.

In summing up. Professor Borrel states that for the time being the following con. clusions he accepted as established:- Cancer is not a fatal or hereditary malady. Sound hygiene of the skin and of the alimentry tract may prevent many forms of cancer. The predisposing causes of cancer and of cancerous infection are multiple. Although the cancer vicis is still unknown, the work of Dr. Peyton Rouse, the example of the sarcoma of the hen, and the recognition of a filter microbe give good ground for hope that before, long the mystery of cancer will be made clear.

Before the war a thousand pounds would make a son or daughter a doctor, if the necessary ability were there, but to-day, it is useless to enter as a medical student unless one be possessed of two thousand-
