Why it remains

The tooth brush, and the ordi-. mary tooth paste cannot effectively combat it. So nearly everybody, however careful, had teeth dis- color and decay.

Dertal science has for years tried to combat this condition, Two ways have now been found. Able authorities have proved them, and leading dentists now · urge their daily use.

A new-type tooth paste has been perfected,, called, Pepsodent. It corrects some old mistakes. These two great film combatants are em- bodied in it for daily application.

Weininger's and Schopen "hauer's "Hallure to differentiato" be- tween positive and negative women effectually invalidates, in my opinion, most of what they had said about her; while a good deal of the rest of the literature dealing with the subject of sex seems to me to fail owing to the fact that it makes no attempt to des scribe a standard or a form before it

Their idea was to collect a number of short stories which should illustrato the art in all its modern variety and its contrasted colours. "As the book shows, there Arc many different fashions of tale-telling, and the change from the older to the younger writers significant, and clearly to be traced.

The short story. in- deed is bound to gain in vegne as time goes on, for its swift and decisive aminca her mentality pretty thoroughly. | MANILA art is well suited to the temper (and, It has been done before, but, curiously! the brief leisure) of our crowded days. enough. the effect has always been to HAIPHONG and it deserves a more permadent set-make the perplexing problem of Femini- ting than that of the magazines and nity more complex instead of simplifying BOBNIO acwspapers, which have been all along, Two more volumes have been added to as we do not forget, its great encour agers,

One thing that will be noticed immed. ately by the readers of "Thirty and One Stories" is the large number of un- familiar names in the list of authors re presented. We have, of course, as we were bound to have in such a collection,, tales by Arnold Bennett, E. G. Wells. May Sinclair, Quiller Couch. John Gals worthy, WV. Jacobs, etc. But I must confess that very many of other names are quite new to me, and it was break- ing new ground to explore the unknown. The stories are all good, however, and each one would be a star item for a magazine. Whether the best story by each author has been selected for inclusion is doubtful Perhaps the idea was rather to give the most typical example of the author's style, regard- less of its other literary values. Nobody could pretend, for instance, that Fino Feathers" is the best of W. W. Jacobs; or that "The Story of Chang Tao" re presents best the delicate art and won- derful originality of Ernest Bramah. So we could go critically through the whole thirty-one and suggest that they should have been replaced by others. After all, what constitutes a good story is always a matter of individual taste. These stories are good enough, but they are not by ang means the best that could have been found.

No piece of originality in any sphere of art or literature ever goes long with- out its imitators, and, in due season, we have a steressor to the richly humorous Young Visiters" of Daisy Ashford. Iris Barry has written a somewhat similar little trifle, called Splashing iuto Society (Constable & Co.). Its 111 pages are mostly extremely funny it is a worthy copy of its obvious model.

Splashing into Society" is the story AGEN IS for Hongkong and South Chins : of the rather sudden rise to faine of· Harold Withersquash and his beautiful Selin. Harold's Lakel Bart" having died conveniently, and left him good bit," Harold must needs.enter “society” and Miss Barry amusingly tells us how he got there very quietly.

The fun begins early, when Harold feall-upon-Selis to tell her of his good

fortune.

Now Selia's ma bad shortly done her day's wash, being Tuesday, and she came and opened the door in a for- hidable style, not being in the best of moods..

gd What is it now 1" snapt she at our bero, and sniffed in her nose, for she was a rum lady, and corshas as well

as cross.

Then they go to a School of Poetry-a delicious bit of satire, this-where appar ently the very best people are to be found:

Having been made Head Post of the land, Harold and Selia must visit Buck ingham Palace to take tea with royalty, They are received by a junjor admiral.

On he led them down pausage after passage and through room after room, and he let them have a peep into where the best of the MP's were thinking/ cht some pew laws, which interested. them both very much,EM

Royalty, apparently, is very homely, for the King and Queen bad pushed hack their thrones and were, sitting

sitting on ** simple chairs.”

That's all right," said the King, Fetting up to push two more chairs to the table for them. We're very glad 3o see you, Excuse, us having started, but we didn't know if you'd get here in time, and we are dying for a cup

But perhaps the richest bit of humour in the book is. Harold's visit to the brain specialist. Excellent dlso is the visit to the divorce court, :

The fus died down and silence, came as a door at the side opened, and amid, a murmur of pity the partys to the divorce were led in, pale-faced, and dis mally clanking the hand-cuffs on their wrists, and the injured husband led the way. There were three in all, the lady, and villian with meck look follow,,! ing after, and the lady was very soberly dressed in black cont and skirt as befittel her position.I

I think enough has been quoted to show wont stuff" Splashing into Society” is made of. The author is evidently born hamourist for she is quite unforced in her style, and manages a chuckle in alniost every line.
