CONFERENCE
It is perhaps not generally known that the New Reclamation. off which so many 'ships were sunk during the typhoon, was ennstructed under the "supervision of a Dander man, the late Mr. James R. Mudie, who also built the Granite City Decks at Kowloon and Aberdeen ton the other side of the island). Many public offiers and Government posts of great importance are filled by Scotsmen, whils it is men who hail from the north "or" Tweed who are the heads of many of the large private business concerns. · Mention! may be made of Mr. Robert Shewan. an Aberdonian, who was for some years a member of the Hongkong Legislative Council, and head of the arm of Shewan Tores, whose interests include the Green Island Cement Co., the China Light and Power Co., and a line de steamships. Messrs. Jardine. Matheson (the. Indo- China Steam Navigation Co.), who own About seventy ships on the China coast, are a Scots firm, as arg. Douglas, Lap raik & Co., the shipowners. The China Navigation Co., better known as Mess, THE PROPOSED ROUND-TABLE Butterfield & Swire must also be inclut ed, Among the Scottish concerns which have made Hongkong one of the chief 'ports of the world. Agents for the Blue Fannel Line, the Company owns about a hundred steunters, many of which were built in Dundee, officered almost exclu- sively by Scotsmen, and enn heast the greatest private graving dock in the world, the Tuikco Dock in Hongkong."
Another important Company trading to Hongkong and elsewhere on the China Ceast is the China Merchants Steam Navigation Co. Subsidised by the Gov. erument, the firm has a Chinese Board of Directors, and their European Super- intendent who is known and respected by "shipping men all along the coast, is a Dundozion. Mr. Gavin Wallace. But of all the Steamship Companies owned by Sectsmen in the Far East, one has hau 7 more romantic gincing than the Great Company Maritima of Manila. Founded by a run-away sailor from Skye, it was developed and extended by Don Juan MacLeod, who was assisted by the Late Mr. J. Mustard, Dundonian, and later by another native of Forfarshire, who was loved and respected by Spaniard and Philipinos alike. Mr. Pat Milkar, now living in retirement near Dundre.
Were car to endeabour to pay honour all Scotsmen in China to whom honour is due mention must be made of yet another Bundouin who uphold the
traditions of his countrymen in the East.
