In a plea for an impartial history of the world. Mr. Chesterton said the most des- picable hypocrite on the face of God's carth was the modern scientific historian,

BOYS AND THEIR READING

BLOUDS" AND LITERATURE.

An allusion to the reading of pernicious| literature by the young was made by Mr. Frank Jones in a lecture delivered before.

Vacation members of the Teachers Course last month. Speaking on the teaching of literature and poetry, Mr. Jones said a good deal of nonsense wILS talked about pernicious literature. When a boy found himself in the children's court he often explained that he had been reading such literature or had been to the pictures. Both of these exenses. the speaker thought, were very clever, because he did not himself believe at all in this pernicious literature story. When they came to the "twopenny blood eut " there was only one real difference be Trousure Istand," for in- tween it and atance that the writer of the "blood- cut had very little imagination, and had to make up for it by throwing away all sorts of restraint which the good. writer exercised. It was no good telling a boy that he ought to read improving literature. There was no better way of turning a boy away from literature than telling him it would do him good. "What you want to do," said Mr. Jones, "is to let the boys buy their favourite" blood cut. Try and wean them froni it, not by pointing out any grammatical errors, but by printing out the stupidity of the story."

The old-fashioned teather was too much afraid of joy, tho speaker continued, hut he was afraid that the modern teacher was too much afraid of work-on the part of the child. If a child were always allowed to du exactly what it wanted it' would have a very rough awakening when it left school. (Cheers.)

So far as poetry was concerned, he advised his hearers not to be satisfied with Scutt, who was a very poor poet indeed. He was a great story-teller and novelist, hat except for his lyrical work his poetry was almost negligible. The poetry boy learned at school was a possession for ever, therefore they want ed him to learn. the very best. Nothing showed bad teaching, Mr. Jones apert cd, so much as the "howler," and the

bowlers responsible parent of all the teacher. "If you have howlers! made in your class," he said, "you ought to sit in sackcloth and ashen.".
