CATASTROPHIC FALL OF" THE MARK.

GERMAN SUGGESTIONS.

BERLIN. September 4th. The catastrophie fall of the mark de monstrates the non-success of the confus ing variety of regulations, proclamations and restrictions.

The demand for foreign currencies is steadily increasing and nobody will be Burprised if sterling reaches three hunt

dred million within a week.

A noteworthy feature of the situation is the growing realisation that the only hope of salvation lies in an agreement with France regarding reparations and the Ruhr, the slogan "Fight to the bitter endbeing succeeded by talk of mutual concessions,

In the meantime discussions by the Ministry of Finance foreshadow the foundation of a gold note bank and the financial dictator appointment of "a cimipped with far-reaching powers.

LONDON, September 6th. Marks, after touching 220 millions, closed at 193, to 205 million to the pound sterling.

POWDER EXPLOSION IN U.S. FOUR KILLED: TWENTY-SEVEN

INJURED.

THE ITALO-GREEK DISPUTE.

GREEKS ANXIOUS TO AVOID INCIDENTS,

Rong September 8th, It is semi-officially announced that the Greek Government has informed the Lentian, French and British Pepresentatives that the Greek Het has been seat from Salamis to the Gulf of Volo in order to avoid coming into comact with Italian warships that might approach the neigh bourhood of Athens, and in order to e tablish the fact that Athens is a defenceless eity:

ATHENS, September uth. The Greek Reet has been ordered to retire to the Gulf of Vain so as to avoid contact with the Italian fleet.

LEAGUE DELIBERATIONS,

GENEVA, September uth. After an hour and a half's deliberation, the Council of the League of Nations has decided to send the Conference of Ambas sadors the whole minutes of to-day's pro- ceedings, including an important reply by the Council, to the Arab

Ambassaulaga!-tele in which the Council makes a num- grum, ber of suggestions" as a basis for a settle ment of Italo-Greek confiet, including the deposit of fifty million lire with a Swiss bank by Grace as security for the payment of eventual indemnities; and re ference of the indemnity question to the International Court of Justice. The Cour-

thus refers the matter to the Conferenco of Ambassadors, but reserves the question of competence of the League for subse quent discussion. The conflict, therefore, pears to be on the fair way to a settle

ment.

LON. COUNCIL AND AMBASSADORS CONFERENCE TO ACT

CONJOINTLY.

The Council's draft reply further suggests: au apology by Grosse, a valute by the Greek fleet, the rendering of military honours and a funeral service at Athens, the appointment, of a commission of en quiry by Greece to which representatives of the three interested Powers be adjoints, the appointment of representatives of the League to supervise a judicial enquiry, and the trial of the accused. Signor Salandra objected to some of the suggestions, and the Council therefore, after a prolonged discussion adopted Lord Robert Cecil's suggestion to send the minutes to the Am- |basadors Conference, This means the Council will treat the affair conjointly with the Conference, thus safeguarding its position and dignity.

SERVICE PAY.

REDUCTIONS

LONDON, September 6th.

A more or less general reduction in the pay of officers and men of the fighting forces is favoured in the report of the committee appointed to enquire into the re- muneration and conditions of emp

employment of State servants, which considers the pas of naval ratings too high and says it should be reduced paralel with the reluc

tions of pay in the army The committee thinks offers up to the rank of Captain in the army and Lieut. Commander in the navy are at present paid more than is necessary, and commends the Army Coun

eil's pay revision schemes, It suggests a substantial reduction in the pay of junior, officers and meu of the Air Force; and sees no reason for an increase in the pay of the Civil Service, white suggesting a longer wurking day in London,
