I have recently had the honor to address The Right Honorable The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, relative to the remuneration received by the Consular Officers in China and the Clerks attached to the Mercantile establishments at Canton respectively; and I think it probable part of the information it contains may be useful to your Lordship, bearing as it does upon the Emoluments of the Public Officers in China compared with those paid to Gentlemen in private employ, I think it desirable to forward to your Lordship an extract of the Despatch in question, which will, I trust, satisfactorily prove that the Government offer The Right Honorable The Earl Grey, etc. etc. to.
