DEVELOPMENT.
Writing on the eve of the late President Harding's tour a writer in The Times said:

President Harding's impending visit to Alika is undertaken, not. as was at 4 vacation first general supposed. as trip, but as very serious errand. Alaska is a cause of concern. fester-child of the United States, after a brilliant beginning, is now suffering from arrested development.
да
For several years Alaska has been struggling along with insufficient help. Five thousand miles from the seat of the Federal Government and from a Congress which imperfectly understands its needs, it has carried on its development hap- buzardly and "has fallen behind in the -march of progress.
4
Between the census of 1910 and that of 1020 it lost 10.000 of its population, mais ly through discouragement. By the latter year there only 53,000 souls to cultivate the immense natural resources of a terri- LTD., tory of 500,000 square miles. A bare half of these were of the white races, any one white person to every twenty-one square miles. The remainder were Eskims all but a few hundreds; and Eskimos are not empire builders.

LONDON TO INDIA BY AIRSHIP.
HOW THE FROPOSED SERVICE WOULD BE RUN..
The last moment attempt in March of last year to save the British airships from destruction occasioned much interest, and there was speculation as to the reply of the Government to the offer of a strong Ansucial syndicate that included Messrs.. Vickers, Limited, and the Seil Oil group, which was prepared to estabhah a four willion pounds company if the Government, in addition to handing over the airships, the material, and the bases, granted'n sub. sidy of £91,000, and if Australia and In in each granted a subsidy of £40,000, capital investment at all; financiers, it is The Government is not asked to make way stat. CHEAPER THAN THE STYAMSHIP, Commander C. Dennis Burney, R.N., who is associated with blessrs. Vicker, is largely responsible for the project, and he is enthusiastic over what can be done to revolutionise Empire communications.
"My whole idea," he said, to a press representative "has been to put the matter before the public in such form that the consequences of scraping the air- ships will be appreciated before it is too late.
