Lord Haig said that during 1023 the Legion had developed at a mie of nearly two bran- ches a day, and at the end of the year there were 089 branches. The problem of finding work for unemployed members had been very difficult to solve, but the unemployment com mittoca bad dona

In benevolent matters the Legion had dealt with 191,000, and the cost of collect- ing and administering represented only 30 per cent. Their only regalar sources of in- come were Poppy Day and the Great War Remembrance League. At present the Great War Remembrance League was rather hanging fire. He thought everybody should belong to it. He hoped their efforts in the coming year would be directed especially ing the seven years time limit for pension applications abolished; to get suit able employment under suitable conditions for tubercular ex-Service men; to induce the Government to art on foot more schemes of employment; and to obtain from the Government a preference for all schemes and der the Trade Facilities Act!' (Cheers.)
THE PRINCE'S SPEEGU.
The Prince of Wales said:As patron of the Legion I feel I have a right to address you. (Cheers.) Wohave now well over two thousand branches, and I feel that the time has come now to consolidate our position, and that any
extension of the Legion should be in the direction of strengthening
existing branches, and in bri

a great deal to be done regards the m establishment of our disabled man. That, is one of our very big troubles. Another prominent feature has been the ex tension of the efforts as regards assisting widowa and dependents in putting pension claims before tribunais The women's side of the organization has recieved fresh im petus from the recent conferencs, and they can help the men enormously. The Council is also helping on sport as much as possible. We all learned to get keen about sport fur- ing the war, and I think some of us are apt
to get a little slack about it now...
War,
I am not going to dovelop the subject of comradeship, but there are one or two things I want to say. That spirit per- vaded all of us Britishers during the Great War. Without that spirit our Empire would not be what it is today. Despite what some people think and say, I'maintain that that spirit is still alive in the country to-day, and nothing can do more to strengthen it than this conference. I expect some of you have

visit like that gives tremendous appeal and brings home to one what was, and is to
day, the spirit of com- radeship. My hest wishes go out to this con- ferente. May you be guided by justice and fair play-the two great qualities for which, ever since its inception, our great organiza tion has always been distinguished. (Cheers)
