addition has been derived from the Police Assessment, owing partly from the collection of arrears due for 1848, and partly from the extension of the tax to the whole Island.
8.
The Expenditure is largely below the Estimate. This is owing to the reduction of the Colonial Establishments generally, and to the comparatively small amounts that have been expended on Public Works of every description. The decrease in Expenditure under these heads is in a great measure accounted for by the Estimate having contemplated the commencement of a Government House, the design of which has not been carried out, for reasons explained in my No 82 of 25th August, last.

The funds at my disposal on the 31st March next, will amount to about £8,000; but should any demand be made from England for payments made there to Chief Justice Hulme, (L. 1250), as I am led to anticipate from Your Lordship's Despatch No 130 of the 14th July, 1849, as well as for certain articles handed over by the Royal Engineer Department, (estimated at £1,815), which had been sent out from England to be used in the erection of the Government House, and of which I can procure no account, the positive funds at my command may be estimated at £5,000.
10.
I estimate that the surplus from the Parliamentary Grant, at my disposal, will be as per account. Your Lordship will observe that the payments made on Works and Buildings, Roads, Straits, and Bridges, do not correspond with the Detailed Estimate prepared for 1849.
