This Excellency to contract a

to a further portion,

the

the Government being willing to pay difference between a certain number of private subscriptions and the sum required.

As there was a

strong wish on

the part of the inhabitants

on:

generally that this road should be speedily finished, I

undertook to

engage to perform the work,

the Contractor agreeing to give

in

the full Engineer's prices for the quantities of different work performed. This he agreed to, and executed the work, receiving

in the

course

of its execution £115 in

part of private subscription. My estimate for

the whole of the second portion contracted for, amounted to £285, odd shillings. But on completion of the work, the Contractor claims, I

understand, the whole £285, with the

£115 already paid him on account, claiming £285, instead of £170, his

35

due. I can only state that my Estimate

was fairly drawn up according to my conscience and the best of my abilities, and I cannot recommend the Government to pay any further

sum than £170 to the Contractor Acheong.

I have, &c.
