LLOYD'S RETURNS FOR LAST QUARTER,

"Loyd's Register" shipbuilding returns for the quarter ended March 31st, 1993 show that, for the first time sines March, 192, an increase, as compared with the previous quarter, in the tonnago qudag construction in Great Britain and Ireland The tonnage building at the end of March, viz.:-1,402,138 tous exceeds by about 1,600 tons the figures given for December 31st, 1923.

The total still includes a considerabla amut of tonnage (181,000 tons) on which work has been suspensted for some time. The total merchant tonnage building in" other countries is 1,367,034 tons, but this includes about 143,000 tons upon which work has been suspended, leaving about 1.220,000 tons actually under construction the latter figure is 50,000 toris less than the end of December, 19. The figures nt for the leading countries abrond are:- Germany and Danzig, 343,027 tous; Franco, 200,581 to: Italy. 195,001 tons: United States, 173,762 tous: Holland. 191,391
