HUMOUR "IN LEGISLATION. OLD LAWS WHICH REGULATE PEOPLE'S MEALS.
Hr. Bumble'a. assertion that "the law is a base has been repeated time after time by unsuccessful litigante, while only a year or two ago one of His Majesty's judges declared that the law of England is thing of shreds and patches," says the Fall Hall Gazette,
Very few people are aware of the many curiona laws which were once enforced in England, and which, ns they have never been repealed, might still be enforced.
The most ridiculous Act of Parliament still in existence though long obsolete, is that regulating the meals of the people. In the reign of Edward III. a law was made forbidiling more than two course being served at dinner or supper except on certain holidays.
Another Acta forbids the consumption of meat on Wednesdays, and all persons breaking this law are liable to a fine of 20s. or a month's imprisonment. Omission to report all breaches of this law coming within oup's knowledge is punishable by an additional penalty of 13, id.
A curious legal, anomaly was recently. pointed out at Kingston, when a man was summoned for selling lavender without a pedlar's licence.
It was proved that he had sold th lavender done up in bags, for which, licence is necessary; had he sold it in the more familiar way in loog stalk, he would not have been a pedlar. The magistrate quite properly dismissed the
Rummons.
When it is retarmbered that the Sunday Closing Society bara initiated several prosecutions for Sunday trading. it is by no means out of the range of possibilities that some
fanatic might PROROHITA you for non-attendance at church, or for motoring on Sunday,
For any body who takes a ride on Sun day is liable to be seized, carriage and all, unless he can produce a certificate. from a justice of the peace to prove that his business is urgent.

means, too, a "dwelling house"; therefore, if a family is sleeping in a tens or booth, and a thief enters, it is not burglary. If all the other condition are met, and it happens that the dawn bas broken, there can be to barglary; for that part of the definition specifying the night time is strictly adhered to.
We meet another of these fine distinc tions in larceny," the stealing of person- al or movable property, which requires that the thief must get complete control.
Thus, if a thief, in attempting to steal a waleh, lifts it cut of man 's pockut and it is not attached to the owner a cham. if the thief gets it into his band for a moment only, it is larceny and felony
If, however, the watch is attached to the clothing, even though the pickpocket- cannot see the chain, as might happen in a crowd, bo has not had complete control, and the act is not inrcony but only a mís den ranour.
The difference of the two terms related only to the length of the sentence; but if it is your ratch, and you wish to so the trial of the would-be thief proceed, yan will do well to see that the indictment does not choose the wrong word.
"THREE IN ONE FLATS. TABLOID HOMES OF NEW YORK.
A New York corespondant of a Lontion paper writes:--
With The population which threatens to exceel 10,000,000 within the next 20 years, the housing problem in New York is developing difficulties which grow more farmidable every year.
Probably is it no exaggeration to say that since the war, with about 400,000 dwell. ings divided among 1,250,000 families, the majority of people living in New York have had to sentent themselves with quarters not much larger than those necorded to passengers in a Transatlantic liner. And the renta
