RHEUMATIC EARLY BRITONS.

By the help of thighs, skulls, and jaw bones, Sir Arthur Keith, at the Royal Insti tution on March 20th, reconstructed pot- tions of the lies and habits of the early Briton.

1.

Traces of rheumatism were very cominen, one out of every three skeletons being afected. Rheumatoid arthritis was also common. Syphilis, however, was 1201- knows, and in this connection Sir Arthur Kaith denied that traces of it had been found either in Egypt or in America in pre-Columbian times. Tubor. calosis was unknown in early Britain, though it was found in Egypt. Rickets had not been found until last year, but since then there were two cases on record...

Excavation had brought to light many instances of injured skulls, but the state- ment that human remains had been found indicating the existence of cannibaliem, was untrue, and for the most part based on post-moriem damage to skuils owing to the pressure of the earth. Trepanning was practised, though to a very much less extent than in France, where it was very prevalent. In this connection it was curious to note that a hundred years ago, when orthodox surgeons besitated about treparing, the operation was very common in Cornwell.

BEETLE NECKLACE LOVE

TOKEN.

A necklace of beetles legs is a novel gift which has been received by the wife of Mr. LM. Shepherd, official secretary to Sir Joseph Cook, the High Commissioner for Australia. It has been sent by a friend who has returned from the Salomon Islands. The necklace, which is now on view in the col- lection of Australian curios in Austra

lina House, Strand, is of тед
