Sir John Harvard Biles, K.C.I.E., Con- AGENTS for Hongkong eulting Naval Architect to the India Offee, arrived in Calcutta, recently, for a few days holiday during a recess of the Indin Mercantile Marine Committee which had been meeting at Delhi during the past month.
In an interview granted The English man, Sir John declared that the Com- mittee was not yet ready to make any recommendations regarding the creation of an Indian. Merchant Marine. The subjects under consideration include the advisability of stimulating the shipping and shipbuilding industries by means of Government aid and subsidies. The poss ibility of training the youth of India to be marine officers and engineers, with the attendant question of founding a naval college for their instruction, in also being discussed.
