IN. TUTANKHAMEN'S TIME. GIFTS FROM BABYLONA,
At University College on Fberuary 20th Miss M. A. Murray, Lecturer in Egypto. logy in the University of, London, deliver, ed a locture on "Tutankhamen and His Time." The lecturer said that Moses, wa the halfway house between us and tha pyramids, and Tutankhamon was about a contury or a little more befora" Moses' The Throne in Egypt was entirely in the female line, and a man became a king by marrying the Queen. Tutankhamen was a worshipper of the sun, and was several thousand years before his time, for he was demonstrating, what was known to be a scientific fact, that life depended on the sun. It was an extraordinary thing to find a man three thousand years age announcing this scientific fact. He was not only a reformer in religion, but aho in art. During his period there arose a school of naturalistic art. He destroyed every mention of the God "Amen," and that was a political movement directed. He against the priesthood of Thobes. objected to war, and might be described, as a conscientious objector. The king spont much of his time in spreading his religion and in composing hymus, one being very similar to the 10th Falm. When Tutankhamen died his Queen wrote to tho King of the Hittites, saying she was n widow, and would be send his son marry her, and thus make hiu: King of Egypt. (Laughter.)
Lo
come
It would be interesting to know, the Iegturer continued, what Tutankhamen's Royal robes wöre like, us they had never seen these clothes in complete form in any of the Royal tombs so far opened. Referring to some of the vises discovered in the tomb, Miss Murray said she could not say from the photograph that they were things of beauty; they struck her as being much, too henry, especially the bandles. They wore in solid, blocks of alabaster. Sho. thought they were the work of a foreign artist sent into Egypt by those who had copied the Egyptian motif and not understood it.
The same cbservation applied to other-objects, such Be the conch so much referred to, The question was, "Where did ther from." That was a question they could marcely expect to get an answer to, but there was a letter on one of the Tol-el- Amara tablets from a Babylonian king, describing some presents he was sending to Amenhotep II. "Verily," said the letter, "I have sent you by the hand of Shutti a couch made ushu wood, ivory, and gold, three couches made of ushu wood and. gald. n throne made of ushu wood and gold, five thrones made of ushu wood and gold, a footstool of shu wood." In Tutankhamen's tomb they had the whole of those cbjects mentioned there, and therefore it would be concluded that there was in that tomb not the ordinary burial of a king, but the end of a line. If the line was a usurping one everything was cleared out and put into the tomb of the last of that line.
Referring to criticisms that it was sacreligious to open the tombs of tho kings, the lecturer quoted from a letter of Professor Elliott Smith, stating that people who made those complaints seemed ta bo unaware that the real desecration was committed twenty-nide conturias ago by the subjects of these rulers, and that modern archeologists, in doing what they had done, had been rescuing these mummies from the destructive vandalism of the modern descendants of those ancient grave plunderars

With picturesque ceremonial the Duke of York was made a Freeman of the City of Glasgow on January 28th. Subso- quently his Royal Highness opened the coming-of-age show of the Scottish Motor Trade Association. Accepting the golded casket containing the burgess ticket, the Duke of York said: "It appears to me as peculiarly happy that my presence in your great Scottish city, for this care- mony, should be my Erst visit after 1 had, may I say, the wisdom, foresight, and good fortune to persuado a Scottish Iaily to become my wife."
