BORROWERS MORALS.
BOOK LENDING PROBLEM
From school days to life's close «uspi- ción of book-borrowers hauats book-own- ors (writes Mr. William Jaggard in the Beekman's Joumal. It is difficult, päin- fully difficult sometimes, to refuse
volama. friend the desired loan of a Equally hard perhaps, haivng dose it, to recall months or years afterwards, the identity of that careles borrower for the purpose of recovering a truant tome, or part of a treasured There seem to be two fairly safe rules only:-
1.-Never to lend (or, as an alterna tive)':
-Keep a loan register, and request borrowers, to sign it
From the rediscovery of the printing art in the 15th century onwards, and even earlier, sundry devices have bun adopt- ed by bibliophiles to protect their liter dry hoards Thean range from friendly appeal, through courteous caution and witty threat, down to the bitterest curse. But literary owners dod guardians know to their cost, that the infallible means for restoring a missing book to their shelves has yet to be invented."
BISHOP AND CURSE,
The earliest English warning I have jet encountered was written in a manu script (Low in the Bodleian Library) over six centuries since. It is amusing to notë: that it take the form of an execration, proving how ancient is that book-borrow- ing trouble.
The MS. formed part of the monastio library at Robertsbridge, "Sussex.' After the dismantling, of this establishment the volume appears to bave wandared to Devon, The inscription is ax follows:-
This book belongs to Saint Mary of Robertsbridge... Whoover, shall stoul it,
or sell it, or in any way alienate it from this house, or mutilato, let him be anathema maranatha
In A.D. 1327-29 the volume passed into the possession of John do. Grandison, Bishop of Exeter, who desired to avoid the denunciation. He had apparently discovered, like wine non-superstitious folk of Inter days, that sundry monkish curses of old have an uncomfortable. habit of taking effect, as witness Cowdray ånd Billesley. Beneath the inscription! the Bishop therefore wrote:-
1, John, Bishop of Exeter, know bat where the aforesaid house is, nor did steal this book; but acquired it in a law- ful way.

The early English library owned by John Willme, of Moscroft, Lancashire, was notable not only for its contents, but for the finest gem of its kind I have yet encountered in the way of bookish verso: I, John Wilme of Mossecroft owneth
mee
Quin ille me jure tenet
Then I 'his booke consent to bed Quicunq; me inspiciet.
in
These four lines vary slightly different books formerly at Moscroft. In a 15th century "Book of Hours," the above was followed by these two delight- ful verses terse, simple, and offective in their open appeal:-
Good finder, who thou art
I speak to the unknown,
Think ever in thy heart
Each one would have his own,
Then keep me not a day,
But freely me restora
To him that will repay
The friendly, evermore.
A zealous Spanish hook-lover, Don
Juan Arbol, of Mexico, used a striking verse, thus rendered by F. "W. Fuller in
Evadne: A handful of verae":
his
Give away a procijous book?
"Tis hard to do it!

Too of you rue it!

Is worse than giving it away
And doing once for all without it! Hence, sirs, you age I scarce pretend My books to trust or give; still leas to

GIVE IT A KICK.
An article upon this subject would mise auch interest if it omitted schoolboy effusions Not to every boy, or man, is given the power of expression in verse, hence, school lyrics more often end in clear doggerel; but the meaning is enough, a these specimens witness. The first one, it should be said, has many variations:
If this book gets, off the track, Give it a kick and send it back:
My book is ous thing,
My fist another,
If you steal the one
You'll feel the other.
Another boy used the following verse, followed by an ominous drawing of a For honest he doubtless gallows. meant "dishonest." It seems somewhat illogical to ask 'n corpse for a missing boold; but to the schoolboy, rhyme in more important than resolt:-
Steal not this book, my honest friend, For fear the gallows will be your end! Up the ladder and down the rope. There you'll hang until you chicke Then I'll come along, and say, Where's that book you stole away 1
