MARTELLADS BAZM FOR

PARIS FASHION NOTES. FROM QUE SPEL DERESENTATIVE, ISABEL KAMBAY.]

PARIB, January 20th. Although Spring, alas, is still far ahead, the "collections which, Parisian designers are preparing for this delight- ful period of the year are, little by little, beginning to be shown to advance buyers

The millinery models are well in hand and even the comparatively small number! of these, yet on view make it possible to prophesy what the general wear will bo next Spring and the first part of Summer.

A few of the shapes are large, many are medium, but the great majority are quite womall...

All it well down on to the head and shade the face, even though they have only a narrow brim. There are no eloche (mushroom) hata to be seen. There are certainly shapes, with drooping brims, but these ato more reminiscent of the coalscuttle hat of the eighties than of a. mushroom shapes,

Milliners have devised a natty way of slipping the trimming through the straw or material shape of a hat, so that it

underneath hang's down

the brim. Ribbons used in this way are rather wide. Another fort of ribbon trimming in favour is that of one end and a bi another, is to fashion several loops of, No. 5 ribbon and place it jauntily on the side. A long ostrich, feather placed downwards at the side of a hat and left. to trail, so that it can be wrapped round, the neck like a boa, if necessary, is quite the latest fad. In fact, there is a general tendency towards trimming that hangs on droops down one side of the lat. Small hats trimmed with a cascade of cocks. feathers, starting, from the top of the orown and trailing down one side no that the tips touch the shoulder, "ara among the simplest and roarteat of models to be seep for wear with tailored suite or simple morning costumes.

The jockey bat is also one of the latest whims of milliners. This shape shows a front brim that bends over the face, slopes off at the sides to such an extent that the edge of the crown is exposed, and rests of the coil of hair at the back. Sometimes the brim is lit at the sides and turned awards at a sharp angle that suggests more or less the effect of Spanish comb. This back piece" is invariably "trimmed in some way or other -feathers quills, a fan of heran's feathers that look like praze of seaweed carefully dried and prepared, hand embroidery carried out in"straw, soutache, or ticy ribbons looped and gathered.

Another popular model is copied from Breman's helmet. It has a little bri which is turned up, not dun; this is narrow in front and wide at the back, Crawling up the back and sitting perched on the top of the crown is, a blue-black rooster with a red comb. This is a saucy little hat which only a woman who has the gift for smartness will be wise to attempt, but its daring and effect are irresistible for those who can wear ite

Andher original model which is far casier to wear is a marquis shape, made about two sizes larger than the traditional size of these bata, "This is more after the style of the bat worn by the courtiers in the days of Louis XVI, and it bas an elegant cockade of leathers at the side.

Hats with drooping brims which are shady without actually being of the muah room type look wall when trimmed with a series of fources. One flounce stands up round the crown and another just droops over the brim so as to shade the eyes and add a mysterious note to the expres sion of these, This iden can be carried out in almost every kind of materiał, from soft felt, velvet and panne to satin and even taffetas

The Salammbo" type of toque is ane- ther style which is very popular, espe cially with young married women. This is the usual toque ibape, with Daps iut ting, out over each car. Sometimes these flaps take the form of loops of ribbon. Such a shape must be pulled down well over the forehead, otherwise, the ride. loops can be hardlooking and unbecom ing A toque of this, type looks well when swathed in, crepe de Chine and finished with loops of Fich-looking bro- cade, oa the elegance of which dependa the whole effect of the toque,

The marquis shape never really goes out of fashion, especially if it follows along the lines of the latest variation... which is known as the Petit Oue." This is carried out in black satin and is trimmed with three rows, of silver braid round the crown and a rosetite of similar.1 braid set in a niche at the back (to be ia keeping with the prevailing tendency towards paradoxes!); a veil drops over the brim reaching in front to just below the nose, and a long end falls down scarf- fashion on the right side.

Petals as a form of trimming are very popular just now with designors. These may be made of the same material as the dress or coat they are intended "to trim, or else they may be made of different material and, if necessary of a different colour. Frequently petals are rendered still more fanciful and decorative by be ing studded with sparkling beads.”

The whole, of a bodice will be trimmed with petale, and worn with a plain skirt Another idea is to add a couple of paneis, covered with petals, and ally, this to #rectly plain bodies. Extra large. petrls can even form, the entire skirt.

A variation of this idea is that of the scallop edge. This appears on every type of garmant Gloves have two scal. loped frills round the writ, fichu collers are treated in a similar fashion; edges
