For this event five winning subscription 'grifins faced the starter. From the running of the previous three days this was generally regarded as a certain victory for Sir Paul's Daidem Dahlia, which pony, in winning three races during the meeting, etablished what we under tand is a record for a subscription Diadem griffin on the local course. Dahlia had won the Valley Stakes, the Subscription Griffins Challenge Cup, and the Rinto" Stakes, and want each rachi by a good margin. To the surprise of his backers Diadem Dahlia was beaten on Saturday by Mr. John Peel's Yellow River, woll ridden by Mr. Crokain, and as the pony was led in the applause of the spectaters was more enthusiastic than it had been at any time during the meeting, save perhaps when it greeted the Champion (Roman Republic) and his Mr. John Peel's Yellow Hiver, 100 ba ridor," Mr. Heard. The meeting was unfortunately marred by a regrettable nccident which occurred as the last race was about to be started, Mr. T. W. Doyle," an experienced rider who has enjoyed many triumphs on the 201. local course, was thrown by his mount, Ridge. Tile, as the ponies were lining up Mr. John Fool's East River, 185 lbs.,
(Mr. Zeelensky) for the start, and was picked up appar ently much injured about the head and Mr. Harridan's Bhudmash, 150 lbs. face, and conveyed off the coure in a motor-car. It was learnt, with relief, afterwards that Mr. Doyle's injuries were not so serious as was at first conjectured, and inquiries yesterday elicited a satis factory report.

In addition to the four extracte from "The Beggar's Opera," the Philbar monia Society, which numbers over 50 performers, will give T. F. Dunhill' "Tubal Cain." The libretto on which this work is based tells of the popularity of Tubal Cain that resulted from his invention of the sword, and the spear.. Seeing, however, the mischief wrought by these weapons, he abandoned his work At last, the idea of the completely. ploughstare occurred to him and he re- turned to his furnace with renewed hope. Thie attractive subject is very fairly treated in Mr. Dunhill's music which has been set for chorus and orchestra.
