BRIMFUL OF ENERGY
Two of the main reasons why so many people are lacking in energy are imperfect digestion and constipation. If your stomach and liver are not doing their work effectively your, system will not be properly nourished. If your bowels are irregular- a certain amount of waste matter. will be retained in the system which will adversely affect the purity of the blood. Now, Beecham's Piils bave an excellent effect upon the digestive and eliminatory organs and exercise a toufs and energising influence apoir the system generally. If you would be healthy, energetic and cheerful you should take a few doses of this reliable medicine.

AUCTION BRIDGE
DEFENSIVE PLAY,
[BY ACH]
generally agreed by bridge players that it is very much easier for the de- clarer to play the cards in his hand and in the dummy than for his opponenta to I play their individual bänds. The de- alarer has to make his contract and the game, but the declaration is his owa choice. Dummy's hand and his own are presumably stronger than the others, and there is, moreover, the advantage of the **single command,” and the fact that the 'declarer" can; see his partner's cards. The opponente, on the other hand, bave po information of their collective strength or weakness other than what they can deduce from the declarations, "if there have been any, and the subsequent play. They only discover the full strength of their combined hands as the game progresses, while the declarer knows his as soon as the first card is played. They are prob- ably fighting a losing battle against. hanty odds, and this requires the greatest mount of skill if utter disaster is not to. over-take, then......
The opponents of the declarer must re-. member that their rôle is a defensive one,: the first object being to save, the game. With the game once saved risks can be run in order to defeat the declarer's con tract and to malet him in penalties, but the saving of the game is more important, and should not be neglected for any thing else. When the game is irretriev ably lost effort must be directed to the saving of as many tricks as possible, and," especially; to prevent the declarer secur- ing a slam. By careful play, observa- tion, judicious discarding, many a hand which is apparently useless may be made to win a trick which will savo the game.
THE FIRST LEAD,
On the player who has the first lead a good deal depends, but if he has a 'sound knowledge of the recognised leads there is not much opportunity for bin to "go astray. If his partner has called a suit, or if he holds certain combinations of high cards," it is only a pues, hom ni leading the card which experience (his own and the accumulated experience of ald playon) has shown to be the best in the circumstances. If playing against a trump declaration do not be afraid of deading your strong suit if the only risk is that the declaror may ruff it; "by ruffing he must weaken his hand, and to force him to waste a small trump in this way may cripple his hand completely. Especially is this the case when there is the chance of leading through the do clarer's hand up to a high card; of thứ 'partuer's) ----Suppose, for instance," that dummy holds the queen and one club, the declarer is known to have none, the op- pouert on the declarer's right has two small ones, and the opponent on his left the ace and one. If the ace is led the declarer will ruff it, and the quee will be good for a trick whenever the dummy gets in, but if the opponent on the de Clarer's right lends a small club, and it is ruffed, the aco will be held up and the queen cannot make a trick.
If it is generally bound play to force the strong hand to ruff, it is certainly wrong to give such as opportunity to the weaker hand, and it it seems likely that the trumps in the dummy will be used for this purpose, the trump suit should hy led by the opponents. A particularly diastrous lead, which is, unfortunately, "not" as rare as one would suppose,

that which allows the declarer his choice cards" in the former case the partner will of ruffing either in his own hand or in imagine the queen, and in the latter case the dummy's To lead a suit of which both | krave, to be in the declarer's 'hand, and the opposing hands are void allows the will not accordingly; probably to the bene declarer to ruff in one hand and to dis£t of the declarer, card & possibly losing card from the Many a player ruins his partner's hand by trying him in different suita re- gardles of the fact that he is by so doing playing the declarer's game. If a euiti has been opened especially at no trumps, that suit should be persevered with un- less there are very strong reasons to the contrary; to lead a fresh suit up to the declarer's hand is ta invite disaster. Should a fresh suit have to be opened it would probably be better to put the de- clares of the dummy in with some suit in which they are known to be strong, and which they are bound to make sooner or later, than to open up an unknown one.
Many players consider themselves bound always to return their partner's lead, but there are, of course, many occa sions on which this should not be done If the partner has declared a suit but Jeada another he is probably, unless he is leading from a singleton in a tramp de claration, waiting for his own suit to be led up to him; he may, in another case, merely to loading through the known strength in the declarer's or the dummy's band, or leading up to their known weak Dess. Such speculative leads should not be misunderstood. The lead up to a weak suit in dummy's band is an excellent ove, and when possible a car just higher than dummy's best should be lod,
In a no-trump band great care should be taken not to block the partner's suit, and, if necessary, high cards must be thrown away in order that the command. The opportunity of helping your part of the suit should not be taken from the ner by overing an honour likely to be partner. On the other hand every care finessed should never be feglected. Sup-should-be taken to blook a auit which the pose, for example that you hold the king declarer is trying to establish. If, in of clubs, the ace, knave and a small club no trumps, dummy has a long suit headed being in the dummy (on your left), and by the king, and ao card of re-entry, the the queen is led from the declarer's band. nce in an opponent's hand should be held If the king is not pat on the quech will up as long as possible to prevent the win the trick and the suit will again he suit making good, even if this involves led, the ace and kanye winning in the end the waste of the dee. Should dummy; but if the king is played on the queen the first trick must be taken by the face, and your partner; if he holds the ten, must make a trick with it. The prim ciple of covering un honour is sound" one but it must not be carried too far: with four cards of a suit it is generally wrong to cover and obviously" "it" ja no use covering when the partner cannot be helped by so doing.
FALSE CARDS.
there bo's card of re-entry in the dummy, efforts should be made to remove it befors the long suit is established or a higher card in the hand of the player on domny's left should be preserved to pre- vont the re-entry,
It may be that a player will realise that a game cannot be saved unless a certain card is held by his partner, and in such circumstances he must play as though be know na a cortality that the hard was actually in bis partner's hand. If the It is of the greatest importance that game will be lost anyhow if the card is the declarer's opponents should not de- not there so great harta can be done, and ceive on another, and "faleo cards" if it is there it is obviously bettor to should not be played by them. It is bet-play on the nexumption that it is.
