RUINED CITIES AND, THE OILFIELD Nor is it only Mosul itself and the rolling downs which represent the ancient Nineveh that are of interest here. Twenty miles lower down, on the opposite side of Tigris, rises the huge mass of Nimrud, the most southerly of the four grent corner, castles of Nineveh. like the others, consists of a square, each side of which of the mystic length of 7,000 ft.the square of Nineveh has been longthened to the south beyond the little stream so that the "latter now cuts the area of the ruins in two it is here that the monstrous and magnificent human- an-headed bulls of marble were found by Layard. And here to this day the marble honde and wings of half-buried figures jut upwards through the turf-too often, alast the quarry for the Arab and the Baghdad Turk. As yet we have but scratched the ground of Assyria Khorabad-another of those corner. places-has been surveyed, but scarcely more; and Nineveh still his square iniles of lent history to yield. Across the river Shatgat now the railhead of the Baghdad line-was as magnificent once as Nimrud, indeed, the whole way down to Baghdad ope rurs.

About woon Ea leave behind the famous, the all too fimous, ilfield of Qaiyyarah-the outflow which has caused all this jealousy and: covetousness, and of which it will be necessary to write an another occasion-and for fifty miles one works bac's way northwards across alicet catirely barron plain, intersected with shallow ravibes dropping to the river on oe's right." There are two rouds That by the river is the safer, and that across the last rdge of the desert the shorter-und you are not always allowed to take your choice. At last, after dipping down into Hammihu Ali, where the sulphur baths are, one rises agais, this tirao on the splendid fragment of an English road, which was indeed last year, but still remains as

to the different standarde of East and West in such vital matters as transport. Then the last fold is won, and the plain of Most lies below one.

There is something that is reminiscent of Damascus in the first sight of Mosul At about the saune distance as that from

which Mohammed himself looked down upon Damascus and decided that to enter so lovely a place might endanger his hopes of a celestial paradise, Mosul and Nineveh, the living and the dead, the provincial and the imperial, are spread out before the traveller. Hetween the dense streets of Mosul and the open grey vordure, where Nineveh lies within the straight grassy folds that betray hur ancient walls, "How's the Tigris in a yellow flood torn into ribbons by willowed and sandy javeaux as it comes south to meet one. The new road now rus. straight through gardens and orchards to the Babel Jadid," or southern gate, leaving on the right; between itself and the river, most of the military and civil administrative quasters of our vecumpa- tion. The Political Officer, Mr. Nalder, had a beautiful house on the bank of the river next the club, but the general's headquarters, 600 yards away were even more attractive. There had once heen here a religious community, and inside the cloister there is the strangest of strange combinations absolute peace and solitude of an Italian monastery all the day, and every evening the strong pervading smell of the petroleum that continually forces izs way upwards through the soli of the bank of Tigris, and even up through its very bed, staining with pridescent clouds the dull brown surface and at times almost making ove cough as one comes acres from Nineveh in the dusk. ** Did Ezarbaddon think of it except as the emanation of the Evil One, or "did Sardanapalus know enough to saturate his famous funeral pyro with crude petroleum.

At first a single shallow well to supply the sight it is strange that half the world is ready to quarrel about the development of this remote and lonely spot. But here there is the new life-blood of the world and perhaps it will be found that there is no other field in any continent which can rival in extent the enormous reser

SOVIET BOOK-KEEPING A FRANK ADMISSION.

[FROM THE TIMES" CORRESPONDENT. } Speaking at the annual Congress of Soviets, in Moscow, on December 23rd, Kamesleff Buid:-

ני

You see, Comrades, that Communists are not book-keepers. We have this year sold the products of State undertakings below cost price. We have simply thrown them on the market in order to get means to keep going, but we are eating up our capital. In January, 1921, our capital: in the cotton industry was 3,700,000, now it is only 1,800,000. Thus we have wasted two million in this branch alone, just because we do not calculate, do not keep proper books. We must stabilize our Unti! our rouble stands Arm, money.

in our there can be no talk of regularity

somy. This year we have exported naphtha to the value of fourteen million gold roubles (£1,400,000), timber for sixteen million (£1,600,000), agricultural pro. ducts for sixteen million (£1,600,000). But our exports have covered only 23 per cent of our Imports, and the rest we have been obliged to pay for in gold. If this shall completely exhaust continues wo our gold reserves, after which will ecme the collapse of our monopoly of foreign trade, with the attendant penetration into our midst of private capital and the victory of the Menshevists....

FEATURES OF THE CITY. Mosul has no great claim to distinction, except, perhaps, the leaning minaret of the Jami El-Kebir, which is indeed a giant pillar and is a mark for miles around in places where nothing else can be seen of the city. Its streets are narrow exccpt for the great street Jadat El-Kebir, which a Turkish vizier began and which we completed in 1920-a wide thoroughfare, 60Et, in width, which cuts its way through the raille of meun houses which, for the most part, is all that Mosul can boast, sparing only the Svrian Catholic school in the heart of the city. On the desert side the old walls remais, but within them, to the west and north, the town has shrunk nearly a quarter of a mile and a rough eultivation parcelled by still traceable tracks where nothing grown, has taken the place of the hovels which once filled the space. The markets are not unlike those of other towas, but are not covered, except in one or two streets near the We were obliged to refuse ono ex

This bridge Here, by the water side, the life ceptionally important concession. of Mosul centres. Last year we presented concession involved our agreement with a to the city a new boat bridge in the place, representative of capital, who stood at of the old patched and unsife causeway, the head of all our capitalist ebeinics, which showed clearly enough the tragedie who could certainly, by means of an it had suffered, and the many hands agreement with us, open up a new era which from half-millennium to half in the reconstruction of Russia. I speak We refused millennium had helped to remake its of Urquhart's concession. Continuity. Beside it rises the Aghwat this concession, first of all, because of its mosque and minaret, the most picturesque scope and power which required a type in Masulphud beyond it, across the river of firm and sound relations between us but a uile away, are the long, low slopes and Great Britain, and such relations of the walls of Nineveh, still treeless, did not really exist, In refusing this were moved, from a houseless, and unbroken from end to end, concession, wo except by the towering church and business point of view, by purely monastery of Jonah-in common justice, political motives, and therefore it is not the patron saint of. impossible that the dearing of the political horizon may provide a basis for resuming the consideration of concrete proposals, contained in this and possibly in other concessions.;

There is not much more that so rapid sketch as this can recall. Probably the fact that that city is built of mud and marble. The quarries are still worked outside the walls on the line of the Baghdad railway to Nigibin-which still can be traced by the long abandoned
