FOUR LONDON LETTER,
OXFORD PROFESSOR AND.. CHINESE EDUCATION,
POPULAR AGITATION OVER THE
ILFORD MURDER. ⠀
[FROM QUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
LONDON, January 11th.
THE ILFORD HULDERERS.
"This week Mrs. Thonrpsod and bar youthful lover, Bywaters, paid the extreme penalty for the murder of the woman's husband, a London shipping clerk, who was stabbed by Bywaters as ho was returning home at ford accom panied by his wife. As briefly mentioned in a previous article, this murder dramat has aroused more public interrat than any similar crime in modern times. Some of the London papors devoted five or six columns daily to the report of the trial, which lasted five days at the Old Bailey The interest is to be explained by the personality of the woman-a good-look ing, imaginative, neurotic, selfish creature with remarkable power of literary expression is her letters to Bywaters disclosed.
Between 60 nad 10 letters addressed to Bywaters were rend at the trial, and it was these that put the hangman's rope round her neck. She professed to lend a very unhappy life at home, and plotted and planned how the un-wanted" husband could be put out of the way by poison. There could be no doubt that she egged the young fellow on to murder Thompson; in the end he came to picture himself in the role of chivalrous champion of beauty in distress.
POPULAR CLAMOUR,
This, anybow, in the manner in which the tragedy was presented to the multitude. It was forgotten that if the couple were so infatuated with each other as the letters appeared to suggest they could have gone away together, But there was some property jointly owned by the husband and wife at Ilford, and they also wanted this or at least the woman did. The only way to got it that occurred to them was to murder Thompson.
Following the sentence of death. unprecedented efforts were made to secure a reprieve for the guilty pair. One popular newspaper organised a monster petition to the Home Secretary, with this object in viaw, and a million people signed it. When this development was reached the chief point of interest in the case for the trained observer of current events was what effect the agitation would have on the Home Secretary.
Would he go against the verdict of the jury who made no recommendation to mercy, and also against the decision of the Court of Criminal Appeal, and yield to "popular clamour? It is to Mr. Bridgeman's credit that he upheld the law. He ignored the sensation mongers, He is known as the kindest of men, but he did his duty regardless of the worked up agitation of the past few weeks, and I have no hesitation in saying that the general opinion of the country supports his decision. Hnd be acted otherwise, those who demanded a reprieve would have claimed that they had forced his hand, and we should have had a similar agitation on some future occasion. And that, of course, would have been tantamount to reducing the administra ition of justice to a sloppy farce..

Everybody is naturally interested in the matrimonial future of the Prince of Wales. From time to time references are made to the subject, chicly to the extent of hoping that His Royal Highness will make love match whenever he decides to choose a bride. This week the Daily Jeux, with a show of exclusive informn tion, boldly announced his probablo' engagement to an Italian Princess. The paragraph contained gomo "sapient reflections on Royal alliances in general, and discreetly phrased references to the pleasure that would be given if the bridle were an English girl. But next day this announcement wia officially denied as being without the, slightest foundation,
A few days later the Daily News mado another announcement, and this time the bride-elect was member of an ancient Secttish family dating back to the Four teenth Century. And again there was a prompt and authoritative official denial, the story being characterised as having no more foundation than the first. If the Duly eu continues to print similar paragaraphs to doubt the editor may eventually discover the future Queen of England by the simple but tedious procces of elimination of eligible ladies, whose In the number is, of course, limited. meantime, the paper, which is not exactly famous for an intimate know ledge of happenings concerning Royalty has only succeeded in making itself ook rather foolish.
