QUEEN'S COLLEGE.. ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING.

ADDRESS BY HE. THE GOVERNOR,

The annual prize-giving in connection with Queos College took place on Saturday. The awards were distributed by His Excellency the Governor, who was mupported on the platform by the Roadmaster (Mr. B. Tanner), Sir William Brunyate, the Hon. Mr. Claud Severn, the Director of Education Mr. E. A. Irving), Mr. F. Ralphs, the Rov. Teesdale Mackintosh, and Mr. Eric Rice. The Headmaster (Mr. B. TANNER) pro sented his report, extracts from which read as follows:-

14

"The total number of scholars enrolled during the year ending December S1st,

1999 was TOD.

The year was a very fortunate one for the school in

that it withcased "an unusually small number of changes in the

staff.

At the end of November we suffered a very serious loss in the resignation of Mr. Cheung Hok-chau, one of the most valuable of mar Chinese Assistanta, and who was for a number of years largely responsible for the success of our Junior Local classes; he left, with the best wishes of all who had worked with him, to take up a business appointment,

thens gamos-avery section in the school! being represented by a team, and after some very close and exalting' tussles both shields were finally won by Commercial Ja, the walls of whose class-room they now help to adorn, The lower school | classes still attend the Chinese YM.C.A. gymnasium for physical dril, gymnastics a swimming. Our boxing instructor, the well-known Sergeant "Kid" Mar- riott, still instructs twice a week in his particular form of the "nolls art," while for Chinese boxing an instructor is pro- vided by the Chinese Boxing Association, Both classes have given several interest ing exhibitions during the year.

Altogether, the year "under review may, I think, bo set down as a prospèr ous and satifactory one for the school.. All our social organisations are very vigorously aliva and continue to play an important part in "the, existence of the school. The Old Boys' Association dinner in April was a great success as was also the Prefects' dinner in March, and our Amateur Dramatic Association gave per- formances in aid of the Swatow Typhoon Relief Fund which enabled us to contri bute a sum of $1,970. To the membera of the Old Boys' Association we are grate. ful for numerous sports prizes and to one Old Boy in particulae for having aguia provided special prizes for Verna- cular. Composition and for competition in Class 8.
