PAUSES.

Professor Winifred Challis, of the Na tional Institute of Industrial Psychology, letured on November 20th at Caxton Hall to the Women's Guild of Empire en The Human Factor in Industry." Giving the results of the introduction of rest pauses, she spoke of the experiment made at the Bethlehem Steel Works in America. Men were there carrying pig- iron, each load weighing 971b, and a cientific observer came to the conclusion that the work was being done in an ex- travagant manner. An average man car- ried in a day's work twelve and a half tons working at his own pace, and at ni

If be worked to fairly average rate. exhaustion under the stimulus of increas ed wages he carried twenty-five tons. But under a system. of "rest pauses, by which he worked only four and a half hours a day with intermittent resting. his output rose to forty-seven and a half tons. Alluding to the question of voen. tion work, the lecturer said there was an astonishing sumber of people who enjoy ed doing monotonous work, because it gave them time to think their own thoughts By investigation it would be possible to determine which were the girls who would minke good typists, and those who would not, and the general suitability for, a given task of a worker; and in this way it was hoped to stimulate production all round. The case of the girl in a laundry whose records had puzzled her employers was instanced. On certain days ber average of mistakes rose to fifty-seren, and then, at the end of a week-whon in the normal way fatigue might have been ex- pected her record of errors fell to twenty- кетер, After inquiry by the welfare worker, it was ascertained that the girl Was temperamental, and that her disliko. for certain kinds of work was strong, Her highest average of mistakes occurred when she was engaged in laundering Bocks, which she hated. Her lowest aver age occurred on the day when she was at work on the D'Oyly Carte jabots, work In which the girl said she adored." this particular laundry, sing the iatro duction of industrial tests and welfare work of this kind, eleven months had elapsed since a single complaint had been received about a lost article.

ENGLAND'S. HISTORY IN

HER NAMES.

A great deal of interesting history, social and economic, may be learnt from a study of English place-names, says a writer in the Daily Chronicle, Some of these are derived from industries which were once very flourishing, bat for vari ous reasons have fallen on darker days or entirely disappeared. For instance, there are quite a number of names which recall the grand old fax industry, onen

general and so important in this f.country We have Flaxton in Torkare, Flax-Bourton, in Somersetshire Benford, which recalls the "retting" or separation of the flax fibre froin the straw, and Little Steeping, which commemorates

Flax, indeed, is one of the oldest of our national industries. As early as 1175 it was included among articles subject to tithe so that fax must have been a thriv- ing culture even then. A few centurita later we find a statute of Henry VII comi – pelling every landowner to cultivate a certain area of flux

In those old days of Merrie. England flax entered very largely into the economy of the English farm. The straw was grown in the fields, and all the subse quest operations of retting and spinning and weaving were performed by the farmer's own family at home. The farm- or himself was dressed in clothes, made of strong linen cloth then manufactured entirely on the farm.

The Government of England was al Улуя very anxious to encourage the growth of flax, and in 1712 we read that a bounty was granted on all exported British-made sail cloth, and a the same tithe it was ordained that the dead should be buried in en ander penalty of a fine. In fact, the industry was very widely spread in England. Some read- ere may be surprised to know that as late as 1870, 24,000 acres in Great Britain were under fax. In 1910 there were only 296 in England and 300 in Scotland, the Septeh fax being used mostly for tha production of linseed.

DEPENDENT ON THE FOREIGNER.,

Many influences I'd to decay The silvery cation-fibre from "Auierica and the Fabrics made from it dealt a heavy blow at the fax industry. Then, gear, Ház was rather a troublesome crop to the farmer, as it involved rather elborate manufacturing processes. And also, after the Crimean War Russian-grown flax began to come in in large quantities. We entered the-war mainly dependent on the foreigner for our dax-we had not foreseen that linen would be so essential ka & covering for deroplane wings. So the Government took the industry an and established five factories in

England: But now those have been taken over hv private companies, and the Government is not helping much. During the war ir England alone there were over 12,000 acres under the erop. In 1921-22 there were only 4,700, but an increase is ex- posted for this year. It is important we should be more self-dependent in flax, Hfor in war we might get noue, from ;

the Continent, and little even from Ireland, where the industry has always prevailed:
