GREAT FINDS IN EGYPT:
ROYAL TOMB AND ITS TREASURES.
in'
Mr. Arthur Weigall (late Inspector. General of Antiquities to the Egyptian Government), writing to the Observer, recently, said:-
Nows has reached London from Egypt of an archeological discovery which seeras to be the greatest ever made in modern timea in that country. In the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings ab. Thebes, int Upper Egypt the Earl of Carnarvon, and Mr. Howard Carter have uncovered a sepulchre in which they have found. the funeral paraphernalia of the Pharaoh Tutankhaman (1330 a.c.), a king of whom very little has so far been known.
The tomb is situated just below the later tomb of Rameses VI.. Astone's throw from the hat where the native watchmen have their quarters, and the removal of the surface gravel and debris, during the systematic search of the valley which is now being conducted here, vealed its entrance. There was a sealed outer door, and beyond this some sixteen steps led down to passage" about 25 feet in length, at the end of which was sajother sealed door. On opening this the excavators found themselves in chamber filled with wonderful objects
LIGHT BRIGADE SURVIVOR. THE STORY OF THE FAMOUS BALACLAVA CHARGE.

Ellis Cutting-le survivor of the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, rode sathed through that gallant but futile Retion-to be hurt by a snow plough near Cedar Rapids (lows). To-day, 68 years after

THE STORY OF THE TOMES.
Until further information comes to hand the full importance of this wonder fat treasure trove cannot be estimated; but meanwhile the following notes will perbare aid the general reader to appre ciate its significance.
The Valley of the Tombs of the Kings lies behind the first range of barren hills. and cliffs which form, as it were the western boundary walls of the fertile valley of the Nile over against the town of Luxor, the site of the ancient Thebee, some 450 miles up stream from Cairo. Here, amongst the decolate and sun scorched rocks, most of the Pharaohs of the Eighteenth Dynasty (1550-1350 8.c.) caused themselves to be buried in more or lees secret tomba hewn out of the hill- sides, where they hoped to be safe from the robbers who, they knew, had plunder ed the more accessible sepulchres of their predecessors in search of the trea sures which were interred with them,
Three tombs were each entered through small and rough bole in the rocks easily able to be concealed by superimposed gravel and rocks; but this insignificant passage opened out into a series of Ana subterranean corridors, stairways, and chambers, leading down to the actual burial-ball, where the king's mammy lay þin a gilded coffin placed within a stone

ONLY SIX.BETURN ALI VIL Most historians say a third of the Light Brigade survived. Cutting, though, saya only six came out alive. Lord Cardigan Taos CTRAL NO. 15. was one of these. "I can't describe it,
beyond me," says Cutting "We were swept through that hell of fire and death, hearing nothing, knowing nothing, feeling All I but a desire to reach the Russians. Everyone hoped to pick a man. thought was to get him first. Instead of rushing in cavalry Lord Raglan ought to have ordered an infantry maneuvre. That would have saved hundreds of brave boys."
Cutting later served in the British Ammy in the Indian Mutiny, in the Lucknow siege, in Egypt, and in South Africa. The only wound he received was a bayonet thrust in one foot. Coming to America he became a fireman on what is now the Rock Island, was promoted to engineer six months later, and served until pensioned in 1910,
Forty years ago he was thrown 60 feet by a rotary snow plough, and sus- tained several broken bones. Apart from that he has never been, in railway work- "Foin Tim" Cutting, the railwaymen call him all over the Rock Island system. He reads newspapers without his glasses, and he walks two miles or more every time he goes to town from his home.
The Pharaohs of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties (1350-1000 8.0) were also buried in this valley, but now there was no more secrecy, and no further attempt to hide the entrances of the tombs, which had become large and im- ARMY PROMOTION EXAMINATIONS. posing; and the kings relied for the safety of their mummies on the vigil- anca of the priests and custodians, and on much bigger and beavier, sarcophagi.
